ZZ plant question
Comments (6)I was going to guess that the moisture control mix has some kind of water-holding agent & suggest against using it. I'd also suggest not potting these up too large, the combination of too large a pot & too wet a mix can surely invite rot. From my observations, these plants prefer smaller pots, they do fine rootbound or tight in their pots. They don't grow big roots, rather a potato-like tuber & some roots from there. The 3 or 4 I have I've grown each from single leaves or a single fat water-retentive stem (don't know what they're called). I grow them mostly in unglazed clay & give a light to medium watering once a wk (the pot it's in can't take a heavy watering). I don't remember what mix I'm using (I make my own), but am guessing it's something like Cactus & Succulent mix combined w/ perlite or pumice (abt 30% of either) to ensure the fast ddrainage....See MoreIndoor plants as sturdy as ZZ Plant, but small?
Comments (5)Chinese evergreen is the answer. They tolerate low light better than most other plants. You might also want to consider setting up a desk lamp with a CFL in the 6500K range to offer a bit more light and give you some more options....See Morequestion about repotting ZZ plants
Comments (23)yep, i read exoticrainforest site too and put them in dappled sun light and when they were producing sev stalks started watering a LITTLE more. and guess what? got yellow leaves pretty soon - tubers started rotting. it prolly is like sansevieria - IF you put it in 90-95F and in partial sun it can be watered well. but that's a very big IF. if you don't have temps over 80F - don't water it more. and certainly not in winter, when most people have cooler conditions. you def need to let it fully dry out to the bottom before you water. look at my plant - how densely the leaves are set and how fat the bases of stalks are. too much water produces weak spindly 'soft' growth (unless you have above-mentioned hot conditions)....See MoreNew to houseplants- how to not kill ZZ Plant and Dracaena Marginata?
Comments (5)Hi! These are not terribly picky plants, things should go well, assuming both are in a pot with a hole in the bottom, and not inappropriately dense/soggy/muddy soil. :+) The one picky aspect of Dracaenas is being sensitive to tap water chemicals. Whenever possible, give that rain water, distilled, or condensate from a dehumidifier or A/C. Sounds like it might be too big to move for watering. A turkey baster will help you remove excess water from a drip saucer. First, the fun. Both of these plants have a "strange people" article. If you like to find the humor in things, plants have some too: http://plantsarethestrangestpeople.blogspot.com/2009/11/fall-guy-dracaena-marginata.html http://plantsarethestrangestpeople.blogspot.com/2008/07/stoner-zamioculcas-zamiifolia.html "should I have removed all of the old soil from the roots?" Yes, that's repotting. What you described doing is merely potting up. Repotting is preferred because variation in soil type/texture makes it difficult for moisture to move from one to the other. "should I have placed some pebbles or perlite or something in the bottom" No, that doesn't help with drainage/aeration, it's just an old wives' tale. Many previous discussions about this if you feel like searching/reading more. I'm also a huge fan of the great info here: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/1490818/good-growing-practices-an-overview-for If you are able to share a pic of your plants, please do.
