It's a Zebra plant, Aphelandra squarrosa. There a numerous web sites for you to study, but I'll direct you to a google page.

Thanks everyone. I bought this at the local supermarket with out any identification/care tags on it, but it looked so unusual and healthy I thought it would make a great Mother's day gift. When I took a closer look at home, I found to my surprise there was only 1 inch of soil on top of the roots. So it need to be re- potted. So far its doing great.

When you repot, up one size, maybe two depending on roots.
After flowering, books state to cut back trunk for future flowers. It took 4 years, but I recently did as they recommended..I rooted the top cuttings which so far, so good..Mom is doing okay, sending out side shoots which I hope bloom in autumn.
Zebras are thirty plants, so water thoroughly, but don't let it sit in water. They also need humidity.
Medium light is best, direct summer sun from south or west window is too harsh.. If you set outside, place in a shady spot. Toni

It is just about finished blooming and the top flower dropped. How should the trunk be cut? The instructions I have only say to remove the flower spike after blooming. I saw contradicting info on the amount of light for this plant, some said full sun others said partial sun. It is in the south window now, maybe it should be moved to the east.
