Is an old grape vine in my urban back yard worth saving?

A few years ago, I bought a row home in Baltimore. The backyard had a rather shaky pergola, which is now completely falling apart and needs to be replaced or at least ripped out, so it's time to redo the whole (small) back yard.

The dilemma to start with is whether or not to work around and try to save what is, I suspect a pretty old grape vine. It makes terrific shaded area, covering the pergola in summer with thick leaves and grapes. I like that, and I just plain like keeping old things around. But, the grapes aren't really edible (of course, if I had a way to prune the vine properly, they might be). It's a single plant with two main trunks (is that the right word, in this context?) each of which has a diameter of about 4.5".

Thoughts?

If you cut the vine nearly to the ground it will grow back as big as you want in one season and you can have grapes the following season.

Yup, you can save just the root system, letting it grow back from the base (cut off at about 2 inches above ground), or you can save the trunk and main wood if you want to.

Age isn't really a factor, to my knowledge, with grapes, I've got some vines that were planted in the 1960s and they are still very vigorous and thrive.

I think there are probably far older vines than mine out there in wine producing regions, especially in Europe. Some may go back a century or more???

I agree that you need to do a little research on grape pruning and training. They can be very vigorous and get out of hand if not pruned properly. "Over pruning" them will not cause permanent damage, but can lead to zero fruit if all the fruiting buds are cut off (fruit buds are on 1-year old wood). I tend to agree with desertdance that it sounds like you now have two 1-year old shoots that should fruit well this year (a picture would really help). The real question is what kind of grape vine is it and it is worth messing with? Why bother if the fruit is not good - replace it with a known variety and harvest good fruit.

Thanks Suzie for the link! Very interesting! Are you sure my grapes would not do well for you in CA? I believe they are good to zone 9 atleast. I ordered them from a place out that way I believe. I should have plenty left if you want to try some. I had an idea. Since my fridge is in a cut out type cabinet, I cannot really get the cuttings up there. However, I do have a heat mat that I use to germinate tomato seeds. It is a very low heat. Do you think they would be good on the heat mat? I remember when I was rooting figs for the first time (figs, my first love!), someone had suggested using a heat mat. How do you feel about this? Well, they are all wrapped in their garbage bags. Hopefully a few will make it! I did use rooting hormone on some of them. I had so many, I figured I could experiment. Well, all 3 vines are in the ground. I planted them yesterday. Hopefully they will take. I also dug up a rose bush that was at the house that my mom planted when I was a baby. I do not know how that will do. I did re-plant it here at my house, but the leaves were already limp. I wonder if roses can survive that. I also took a few cuttings from the branches, only about 4. I read to stick it in rooting hormone then into dirt with a soda bottle on top of it. They said to keep a few leaves on them, but the leaves are already pretty limp. I do not know much about roses, so I do not know if they will survive or not. That would be a shame. Although this bush is over 30 years old, it was cut way back, almost to the ground a year or so ago, so it was not as big as you would think it should be. It did have this huge, deep, long main root that I had to cut at one point since it was down so deep. Well, I will update on the grapes, and also the rose bush. thanks again for all the info! Christy

Napapen, thank you! We replaced the vine my brother mistakenly pulled up. Never had any critters on it until the last few years. I looked online trying to identify that beautiful butterfly and those awful caterpillars that dessimated Mom's beloved passion vine. We didn't plant for the critters, only planted it for Mom. Never could identify it and now you've done it for me. I just spotted a few butterflies this last week, which means that I will soon be spending my evenings out by the front porch picking of caterpillars.

I'm still fighting them. Problem is trying to convince neighbors to do the same...and CONTINUE the fight. As I said, once they get onto phone lines or higher nearby branches, we're toast. And if they're near a fence we have to ask permission to go into the yard. And the nuts on one side actually like them so I have to sneak out and do their back trees without riling them. I've heard Roundup Brush Remover does a fairly good job with repeat applications, and read about a product called Vinex. Vinex sounds like something you brush on the roots to kill them. Check it out at Vinex.com, I think. They have a zip code link that will tell you where it's available in your area--not a lot of places carry it and its pricey but not as expensive as removal, replanting of dead trees not to mention the years it takes to get them back to a decent size. Here you go ... 240 years and still producing. Probably there are older ones but perhaps not sufficiently well-documented to age accurately.

Thank you all for the responses! That makes me feel better.

Does it matter when during the year I cut it back that far? Or will the vine come back even if whacked off in mid summer?

You shouldn't really do it later than about July 4th, because the new growth will need to time to mature and harden off going into the autumn. If you do it later, the odds are very, very slim you will kill the vine, but the new growth that emerges might not make the winter, and the vine would have to start over from square one the next spring.

What I have read is that grapes cannot isolate and heal over a cut like trees. So a large pruning wound is likely to become rotted with time.
The recommendations I read was to cut as low to the ground as possible/reasonable, and then mound soil over the shoots that emerge so that they can self-root. The old rootsystem will supposedly support them well for several years, and the new root system should be well established by the time rot takes out the old.

I have a similar situation, in that we have a decades-old grapevine that I'd like to revive. It has been covered in blackberries for years, but was growing up into a tree to find light even last year. I hadn't thought to cut it all the way back, because the woody vine itself is maybe twenty feet long. But my question: will new growth sprout along that long vine, or only from the ends (or stump if I prune it back)? It just seems crazy to cut the plant back all that way.

You didn't state what the grapes were--muscadine, concord type, white/amber/ thin skins etc...

I went to a 'pruning clinic' at the local 'pick your own' vineyard and the County AG agent used a saw on the oldest, heaviest of the vines, He cut them to the ground, The next spring, he chose two of the sprouts to use as the main trunk,, by the third yr he had it on the wire that was 6' tall. Pruning is always a little scary to me but after watching this-- I decided I could do it.. Good luck..
