We had a blockage at one point and pulled out tree roots when cleaning. The maple was only feet from the sewer line and it is a old house, so it is not surprising. The new tree will be planted further away from the pipe. I think the other trees on my street are lindens, but I'm so bad at identifying trees. From the bark, it looks like lindens from the pictures I looked at online. Also, I don't jump over these trees, but don't frown either if that makes sense. It isn't an issue the city is offering a tree and I'm happy they ripped out the maple (it scared me with constantly falling large limbs). I'm just going to use the tree as the base for designing the front yard and don't want to find out I based my plan off a horrible tree. Hope that makes sense. I'm just a little confused as some sites classify the these trees as medium trees and others indicate large. Maybe they stay smaller when planted as street trees?

Lemonwood grows to about forty feet high and ten-plus wide. It has a whitish bark and sweet-smelling greenish-yellow flowers in spring with big clusters of green, hard-berry fruit over the winter. It develops an umbrella shape with age. They naturally have a surface-rooting system and are better for being mulched with something loose, such as bark nuggets or a cambium mix. A neutral to acid soil is fine, either free-draining or with a proportion of silty-clay. Once established they will tolerate dry conditions but not months of low to no rain. If you think it appropriate for your conditions - water crystals or a soil wetting agent night help to retain moisture while the plant settles in. Water well at least once a month over summer once it has settled down and is growing on. Even at three feet high I'd stake it for the first little while to protect it from wind rock. If you have grazing animals that visit your yard then some trunk protection could be useful. When you plant try to ensure that there are no roots coming up to 'strangle' the trunk. Sometimes this can be fatal, though it doesn't happen with the self-sown ones. If you have a fish pond do not plant this tree nearby. If the flowers fall in the water in spring the fish are not happy. (they float and look dazed.) Expect it to lose some leaves after winter as it changes for the coming season, and to shed little leaf sheaths. It's not a 'messy' tree, though, and it needs very little to no pruning. It does attract bees but the flowers are usually well away from passers by and stings are rare. It might get aphids, but I'd more expect caterpillars and leaf-rollers, and maybe borer as it gets older. They're pretty good about breaking out new growth from old wood if they're damaged but not if they're ring-barked. They're not 'heritage' trees, usually. 30+ years, but they age nicely - with 'character' if all goes well. If you can hold it in the container until you know you'll have reliable rainfall - plant out then. It easily tolerates mild frosts of -5C that are clear by mid-morning. Use a broad planting hole so the roots spread more than 'go down'. Leaf mold or a plain compost with low manure/fertiliser would probably suit, forked through the natural soil. The seeds are carried by birds and usually start into action under other trees in the duff that gathers on the ground. If you want to underplant it - hardy ferns that tolerate sun, grasses, Arthropodium, or even succulents, are all possibles. If you would prefer it in a border planting then it will also grow in company. And, having said that it doesn't need pruning - it can be kept clipped like a hedgeplant, thought it is less likely to flower.

If you posted in the "Tool Shed" section you would have found enthusiastic response! I'm one of those guys that loves to do it all myself. I have the chainsaws and even a chipper to turn it all into compost. For a chainsaw I think you are on the right track. Consider the Echo CS-370 with the 16" bar. You could get by with a 14" bar with this little cabbage palm but you will be glad to have the extra length on other projects that will come along. I also have a gas pole saw with extensions and a 12" bar. It isn't telescopic. I just add or remove a section as needed. Wonderful tool. I keep my neighbors properties and my own pruned and tend to do it at the onset of Hurricane season. I never charge them but I seem to get a lot of cold beer from them. For this tree, I would drop it whole to the ground since you mentioned that you have plenty of room. Buck it after you drop it. Be sure to keep your chain out of the sand as it will dull it instantly on contact. Palm wood is hard on chains to begin with. It is stringy stuff and actually has sand in it. It would be advisable to purchase an extra chain and a sharpening file so you can touch up the chain between tanks of fuel. One thing to add here is that there is more to buy then just the saws. You should be wearing chainsaw chaps, steel toe boots, and eye and ear protection. I have a forestry hat that takes care of the eye and ear protection and use it for lots of other chores like running the chipper and even weed wacking. The great thing about the forestry helmet is that the eye screen and ear muffs can be pivoted up between cuts. Have fun with the job and be safe.

I spent a ton of money with them and remember being pretty disappointed(about 10 years ago) I had to mention them because so many recommend them. How did I lose my trees...:o( I moved, literally 24 miles away about 7 years ago(during the summer) and didn't think that my plants being outside would be an issue. They had weathered outside all year at my other place. I woke up one morning to SNOW! The 24 mile move shifted me from zone 9 to as you see 8b and I had no idea. I lost a multitude of bananas, heliconias, palms, elephant ears, gingers and orchids. I tried desperately to save everything and I lost the battle.
