black swallowtail caterpillar found

OK, first I was ready to squish this booger, cuz he completely ate my italian parsley plant to the ground...but he's very unique and pretty, and I'd like to protect him so he can do his thing and become a butterfly, BUT NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF my herb garden.

So what can I do? I have never had good sucess at keeping catepillars. And I'm kinda reluctant to release him to my plants again!
