Odd-looking ridged, wide Black Beauty eggplants - suggestions?

My Black Beauty plants are producing short, wide, ridged fruit:

This one is about 6 inches wide and 4 inches long, with deep ridges. The skin is smooth, taut, and shiny, and the plant itself appears healthy. The blossom end of the fruit has catfacing. {{gwi:102258}}

Are they edible with this catfacing?

The eggplants are growing in a bed that contains vigorous and productive pepper, tomato, and cucumber plants. There are a lot of blossoms on the eggplant plants, but they are just now starting to produce fruit. Temperatures have been consistently warm and we've had a fair bit of rain this year, but not excessive amounts lately.

Nutrient deficiency or excess? Incorrect environmental conditions? Pest problem? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!
