Why are my carrots so small?

I planted my carrots at the very first of the season, back in April. They are in a raised bed that is somewhat sandy and I scatter planted them with radishes which of course are long gone. I started pulling carrots over a month ago because the tops were poking out and some were quite large.. but to my dismay, all have been so short, around 1-4 inches at most. Some have a bigger diameter than length! The variety I planted is Danvers 125. Not the short ones, the package says they should have been 7-8" What can I do next year to get longer roots, and is there a better variety to grow? I don't mind if they are short but mine are really tapered so I am limited to what is on the thickest part.
