Sweet Potato problems

We tried growing Sweet Potatoes for the first time this year. I started our slips by purchasing a normal sweet potato from the local Wal Mart, the planted it in some really good soil in a pot. Once the vine started and got to at least 2 inches long I transplanted it to our garden. It grew like crazy, it was super healthy and so vibrant. I planted it in the garden on April 1, 2012. Yesterday, August 23, 2012 I dug around the bottom of the plant to check to see if we had any sweet potatoes ready and this is what we found. (see picture) My concern is that the actual potato is only a little root like thing. It really is not big enough to do much with. What am I doing wrong? Should we wait more patiently, give it more time to produce potatoes? You would think that 4 + months would be long enough right? Any advice would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
