acrylic for concrete

I keep reading about concrete dye. Has anybody used just a little acrylic paint, like patio paint for instance, when mixing concrete? I have lots of that and can't see why it wouldn't work, but I haven't worked with concrete before. I'm going to make some stepping stones real soon and then, hopefully, some cast leaves.

The paint won't hold up when it's mixed in, kind of pale muted colors. They wash out completely in a short time in the outdoors. If you add too much paint to the mix; the mixture won't cure. Billie

Thanks for your reply. I guess I'll forget that idea and just paint the surface or use dye if I want color.

Carol I use this mix for many things...but not for spheres. I don't know why it wouldn't work though. If you are going to use it for a sphere I would recommend using half water and half addmix. I use my recipe for really fine detailed (thin) leaves that will be added to the exterior of pots or other things. They come out thin but strong. When I do a sphere I start at the top with a pattie of mix and then embed enough strips of mesh in that pattie to cover the ball, adding concrete then pushing the mesh into the crete as I work down. Of course I add another layer the next morning. The mix should be great for the flower shape...we want to see pics when they are done. Kevin

Pool decking problems -- suggestions???

Kim in LV and I have had lots of discussion about decking options, We are in Vegas, she is a recent poster, see her new deck. It is gorgeous. Overlays do have their problems unless they are done correctly, and even a top quality job can do exactly what you are describing. There are many brands, some better than others. Most companies warrant work for 5 years. Driveways of course are more of a problem than pool decks. Its not your original concrete, its the overlay product that is failing. Was that overlay cool enough to walk on? There are a few newer brands that claim to stop exactly what you are describing. The old overlay would have to be removed to use them. I don't know if I''m allowed to name a brand. Then again, I see brands discussed on here for pool finishes and I'm not soliciting your business since we're not in Phoenix. Take a look at Elite Crete. I have been to their installer class and I like the look of it, but we have only done 2 jobs with it, and those in the last few months. Hope this helps, Barb

Never mind. I already looked at samples first hand (I had planned to anyway, but was looking for advice). I decided to go with American Paver Systems (APS) coping in Cream color. Looks good. The Flagstone Paver (FP) coping in Sand was way too dark once seen in person. And the FP cream was a tad darker than APS' cream. Just sharing. -Gorilla

I always come back to painting my "stuff". I've had craft store acrylic paint hold up for quite a few seasons. It holds up even better if you seal. I don't both sealing. I re-paint if I want to, most times I don't. I also use wood stain. I usually don't paint the whole thing, just accent. Billie

I love using color--I made a couple moons that hang in front of my house--molded in metal barrel rings about 3 inch thick. The one quarter moon was colored by the "stab" technique (my term). I just sprinkled red and black oxide in a random pattern on my wet qtr moon and stabbed it in with a chop stick which also gave it a knarly texture in the areas where I stabbed it in. The full moon has black oxide across it and looks like clouds on a white moon. Basically, as long as it a mineral based dye/colorant it can be used but to excess will compromise your mix strength. I would stay away from paint as an integral--surface colorant is fine for paint. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hope this helps a little.

Both Homer and Lowes carry cement dye that is used for casting stepping stones and the like. Is there any reason that it wouldn't work in the tufa?

the liquid dyes found in the concrete department work great but the color selection is limited to 4 colors.

More colors - powder - can be found at some concrete suppliers. And then as Billie suggested you can always use craft paints.

Look in the yellow pages for a place that sells concrete supplies in your area. Most likely they will have powered colorants for cement. It maybe be cheaper that this link that I am providing.
