We didn't have those cool summer nights in july - so the winter squash has been a nice producer....have used 3 spaghetti squash so far and about 5 more are ready whenever....

summer squash has been ok - cukes have done quite well.

May yet get some melons....we shall see how the late summer/early fall weather goes....

Bad news - cucumber beetles.

Good news - cucumber beetles don't seem to be harming butternut squash or zucchini.

The good news is that most of the potted tomato plants are thoroughly enjoying our hot, dry, HOT summer, although we have reached the point of having to water them twice a day. I always plant early tomatoes that are adapted to cool climates, as my mountain-side garden usually has cool night tempteratures all summer long, and only a couple of weeks of real heat. This year has just been hot. The Amber Colored toms are pumping out ripe fruit, the Maritime Pink has put out a couple, but Glacier hasn't ripened a single tomato yet.

The bad news is that I haven't been able to pump enough water onto the beans to keep them happy. We haven't had our rainy season this summer, and the garden is dry, dry, dry! Cherokee Trail of Tears has climbed about 3 feet, but I haven't seen any flowers. True Cranberry and Purple Pole are just beginning to climb, and again, no flowers. Golden Lima is down to one plant, dropped its flowers, and is just being useless. I need seeds from that one!!!

Good news= the grapes are larger and sweeter than ever. Hubby calls them Scupperdines. Can't remember which ones are scuppernongs and which ones are muscadines! Bell peppers are producing better than ever!
Bad news= tomatoes had a really bad year. Too hot. Cucumbers produced well in the beginning and then almost stopped.

Bad news....Hot weather isn't over.

Good news...I have harvested some yellow squash with the potential for a lot more before the heat returns.

Good news: Still harvesting spring planted Packman broccoli,some with medium heads. Toms are doing ok, have harvested several times. Blue Lake and Rocdor bush beans are doing well. Got some carrots,cukes, couple summer squash, Adirondack red potatoes.

Bad news: Squash vine borer got most of my plants. Deer (mom and twin fawns - apparently they live around the corner in my friend's neighbor's yard - cute but destructive) trampled some of my late seeded carrots, beets, lettuce. This is in the burbs, too.

Bad news: the raised bed with the tomato trellis has bacterial canker, and shouldn't be planted in tomatoes for at least 3 years.

Good news -- dare I say it? -- no cucumber beetles, and no squash vine borers either. And the only mildew is on the cukes.

Good news - we've gotten a bounty blessing from our tomatoes already (in spite of BER and hornworms), + squash, + peppers, with the promise of much more to come. Our white corn (Sugar Pearl), while not delivering a bumper crop was enough to be satisfying and very, VERY delicious. I only planted 3 Golden Acres cabbages and all 3 heads were also yummy. 1st planting of green beans didn't do quite as well as I'd hoped, but we did get several meals' worth - just not enough to freeze. 2nd planting is looking much better and DH bartered with the next door neighbor and got enough green beans from his garden that we put 5 bags in the freezer (LOVE free food!)

Bad news - Fennel and radishes both bolted before we got to eat any of either of them; dill died an early death, and I've no idea why; Swiss Chard planted in the spring is maybe, if I stretch a leaf, 4" tall at most; and the other sweet corn we planted was awful. I don't know exactly what variety it was; it was a "freebie" from Shumway, the package just said "experimental". They need to keep experimenting!!

So all-in-all this year, given the weird weather and all, our good vastly outnumbered the bad. I feel so blessed and grateful that mealtime grace isn't just a ritual!

Good news: Butternut squash doing well. Hopefully some tomatoes by Labor Day.

Bad news: Voles ate all by green beans, lots of my potatoes and even some onions.
