Has anyone used colored grout in their tufa projects

I was walking the aisles of Lowe's the other day (more fun than grocery shopping!) and a box of blue sanded grout mix caught my eye. I was wondering if the colored sand could be added to tufa to replace some of the sand. The color is really great but I'm wondering if it would last outside. Has anyone ever tried this. Thought I would ask before I waste perfectly good materials.

I haven't used any in tufa, however I do mosaics, and I have made tree faces, lizards, etc with left over grout. They have held up fine out side here in my zone. The colored grout's cost would keep me away from using it as an additive I guess.I don't know why it wouldn't work though, the ingredients all sound fine.

I used a whole bag (5 lbs) in a mix for a sphere once (Portland, perlite, black sand, black grout - I don't remember the proportions but it totaled about 10 gallons.) I was hoping to get a really dark black sphere with white specks and black sparkles but the grout was not enough to make a really black mix. I ended up with a light charcoal gray. The sphere looks pretty good when it is wet but seem a bit dull otherwise.

The guy at the paint store told me it is not real paint and doesn't hold up well. Could have been the color, I'm not sure. But they aren't formulated to last like their products. For a small mirror project, I don't think I'd worry about it. You could paint it and then seal over it. I would use a good primer first. You could even make it into a chalk paint, which is supposed to stick to anything. Those old cheap builder flat paints break down over time. I'm dealing with it now in my house and it is not fun! I looked into buying a deep cobalt blue grout for a bathroom and saw a fair bit of feedback that the color was inconsistent if you used too much water when you mixed it or when you wiped it down (an overly wet sponge would pull the color from the grout). It seemed a little too prone to user error for me, so I went with a pale grey grout. I loved the look in pictures, just didn't want to take the chance.

David,
Have you put a sealant of any kind on your sphere? Sometimes that will create a deeper and vibrant color, more similar to when the item is wet. Sealers of course are a matter of taste too, wetlook, shiney, matt, clear, etc...

Remember, grout is basically a cement mix. The sanded grout has less cement & more sand.

Hi Dena,

No, I have not used a sealer on the sphere. I think you are right; if I worked on the finish a bit it probably would get closer to the dark granite look for which I was hoping. I scarred the surface of that sphere as I was unmolding it and it looks just like a seam or parting line, something I was particularly trying to avoid. So I did not spend any more time on it. I'll try again sometime.
