Can I Prune Back The Leader of Our Clapps Pear Tree

clare2008

With some great Garden Web members help, OOps!! perhaps we bought our Clapps Pear trees at too tall a height... Sooo now what??

They stand 6-8 ft tall and have a base diameter of 1 1/2 - 2 inches. They have lots of good vertical, untrained growth,; some good scaffold branches with nice fat buds..

Should we leave the trees as is and try for a "pyramid" shape or should we cut back the leaders and try for the "open vase" shape??

And are we too late to prune as we are already into May...
