How much does it make?

Is there a way to figure how much to mix for a specific size project? Say I want to make a box 12x12x4? Or if I want to make a box 25X12X4? Is there a way to correlate the amount of ingredients needed to the size I'm desiring?

I would figure the approx. total volume of material in the finished piece.
11x4x4x2=352cu.in. for the sides.
11x11x2=242cu.in. for bottom.
Total 594cu.in. This is only approximate assuming a two inch wall thickness. These measurements are larger than actual, but you would rather have too much than too little mix.
I have selected a large coffee can as my unit of measure for all pieces I make. I know from experience that ten units will make a piece of 900cu.in volume, so I would make dry mix of 6 1/2 units of dry mix.--If mix is equal parts cement perlite and peatmoss, I probably would use two over flowing units of each.
Keep in mind that this is only an approximation that is a good starting amount. Experience will tell what adjustments to make in the amount of mix actually used. When it comes to bowl shapes I assume a cylinder of the average diameter x thickness plus a circle of the same size x thickness for the bottom. My method is seldom perfect,but it is usually close.

Arthurm, you are right. Micro-clime is very important. When I grew my plants in a northern exposure, with very little overhang, it was as you describe- double canvas over them in the summer and one layer or none in the winter. (Don't know the percentages, It was just coarse canvas). When we moved into this house, with a deep patio and a southern exposure I learned a lesson much like Jane's. In the winter the sun was lower in the sky and therefore reached deeper under the overhand for a longer duration. Burned a lot of plants before I realized my mistake. For now, I have the plants fairly close to the same place they were growing before. Just a little closer to the eastern side of the patio to catch that morning sun. So far (its been two days) I see no burning and the leaves have not felt hot to the touch. I have a mix of the usual villains. Catts, Dends, Phals, and some Oncids. Been getting some Tolumnias lately too. I have been growing the Dends on the east side of the growing area and by late morning they did feel warm but, they never seemed to burn. I guess they were acclimated. I am hoping that since most of the plants are already acclimated to the area before the screen went up, they should be ok and might even take a little more. I think they would like a little more light than they were getting under the overhang. They have not really thrived since we moved to this house. I guess the Dends will be my primary guinnie pigs for light experiments. My fingers are crossed!

Information from the article- "Worm compost also makes excellent tea, without the hassle of turning or checking the temperature (of compost). I own one of the ones that are featured at Sams/Costco/etc. The brand and model is Nostalgia Electrics CCP-509. The kettle is a 4oz size which pops roughly 1.5 times the amount normally yielded by microwave popcorn bags. But it is very easy to just pop several batches in a row and let them sit in the base of the unit where the warming tray is located. Popcorn tastes better if it has a chance to thoroughly dry out all the steam involved in the popping process. The warming tray helps in that regard. It's (obviously) more "hassle" than microwave, but the finished product in my opinion tastes better, and let's face it...it's fun to have your own popper, particularly if you have a dedicated home theatre. The usual price for this model is around $250 but if you hunt around you can find them for less than that (try amazon, which is where mine came from). There is one at Costco supposedly without the wheeled cart/stand that is around $169, so if you don't need a stand, that might be an option. Of course, there are better quality models (read higher-priced) out there but I've been very pleased with the quality of mine, especially considering the price. I participate in a Home Theatre forum on the web that has lots of discussion of Poppers, but I don't want to overstep the local rules here by sharing that address. If a realtor is any good and working with a buyer who is willing to go to $300K, their searches should include homes to at least $310K unless the market is tending to go at full list or above. I would go with the one that I felt most comfortable working with and who I thought had the best plan for marketing the house. The woman's enthusiasm for the home may more than make up for less than $4k difference in price. Also, can you talk to anyone who has used the agents? The gushy ones sometimes lose their charm after they get the business -- in any business. How is she at getting offers and closing deals? We have an agent in our area who is known for listing high. Some of the houses sell well (perhaps with buyers who are not afraid to offer what they think the house is worth and work it or walk), but we've watched many of them sit -- often through one or more price reductions. There is one on my street now that is on at least it's second reduction. Doesn't help that the listing photos have the most bizarre lighting and give the home a strange feel --- and the staging is odd. Like I said, consider the marketing -- look at their other listings, photos, ads, listen to what they can do to market your home, consider their network (probably both good on that last point) -- and who would you rather be working with to negotiate on your behalf. thanks so much for the info - both of you! I'm anxious to get started! I just picked up an old (free) cement mixer and plan to use it for my start in hypertufa. I'll start with a few troughs for my plants, but then I have a big project in mind. I have a pond, and I want to make rocks to hide the pipe coming from my biofilter to the waterfall - kind of like a tunnel - to put over the pvc piping. Now I just have to search out the material components in my neighborhood. Thanks for the help.

I mix all but the portland and water, say 1/2 sand and 1/2 peat, even alternating scoops until the form walls are full. Count as you go. If it's 20 sand, 20 peat, add 20 Portland and water and it will all work out. Portland and water flow around the other components and don't add much volume.
