Can I rehab an almost leafless 6 ft tall potted umbrella plant?

I inherited a neglected but sentimentally significant potted umbrella plant. It is 6 ft tall & the poor thing has only three struggling leaf pods at the very top. Very unsightly!

After being repotted and placed outside in partial sun in the Atlanta spring climate, it is sprouting a new leaf pod at the top, which we are glad to see.

BUT we really need this plant to be 1/2 it's current height and NOT growing from the top until filled out properly. Thanks for any advice- we love this 13 year old plant!
