Gorilla Glue for leaf repair?

A very large leaf I cast a couple of years ago broke in half as I was cleaning it. I saved it and am wondering if anyone else has tried something like Gorilla Glue to mend leaves? I can put on a fiberglass backing afterwards and add some wet mix, but need to hold the pieces together. I think construction adhesive will be too thick and sticky to do the job.

It will work but I strongly recommend you practice first.
I hate G glue myself even though it is great glue. It foams up and is really difficult to remove if you get it one the surface but I have a friend who loves it and can do invisible mends easily.

This is my favorite glue. Sort of like Gorilla glue but doesn't foam up as much and really holds tight. After repairing, you can use a slurry to cover the cracks. This "oops" happened last summer and the planter is still holding up perfectly.

Well, the thing is, it's much more liquidy than Great Stuff, which I assume is that insulation foam? (like the black pond foam many of us use to stick our rocks together, only--- not black). The foam tends to stick to itself more, whereas the Gorilla Glue has a much more liquid consistency (which is why it dripped into the pond in the first place -- I'd thought it was going to have higher viscosity -- instead, it ran down a rock). When it dripped into the pond, it looked like an oil spill, swirling around the top and making that "rainbow" look. Now, two days later, what's left of it has formed harder masses, which can be much more easily scooped out of the pond. However it seems miraculous that the fish, when poking it from below, didn't get any on their little noses! I am grateful, particularly since the bottle says "keep away from children and pets" (!)

Thanks, I do have on hand two types of "Goop" and one of "Liquid Nails", that address about any materials I can think of. I also recall, and have on hand, plaster of paris, which is used to attach fixtures in a shower stall, for example. This has held up well and brick couldn't be any harder to "glue" than tile.

I agree you have to REALLY babysit curing Gorila Glue, but haven't had a problem with removal. Had to take it off a mosaiced teapot tower (repaired the handle), but it came right off with a sharp razor blade...left very little residue. I've also had to 'pop' off bubbles of it in various places, but again found it easy to remove. Hope that's not bad omen for the projects I used it on or that I used it for the wrong thng!! Pat

No, glue and putty won't hold a screw. The best repair is to drill a ~1/2" hole centered on the failed screw then glue in a cross-grain slightly tapered plug made from the same species of wood as the piece. Match the grain direction, put just a dab of glue on it and pound it into the hole, then trim it flush with a saw or chisel. Once the glue is set you can re-drill the screw hole and be good for another 150 years. Cross grain plugs can be purchased at a woodworking supply place in common species, or you can buy a plug cutter to make your own from any wood. You shouldn't use a dowel in this sort of application because the grain in dowling runs the length of the dowel, opposite of the grain in the board you're repairing. The end grain has much less strength for holding screws. The fact that this piece has already failed once suggests that a weaker joint would be doomed to premature failure. There will be the inevitable suggestion of stuffing toothpicks and glue into the hole and re-inserting the same or a larger screw. If you value this piece of furniture a all don't woodbutcher it in that way. That kind of repair is fine for Ikea stuff that is only intended to last a few years, but not real furniture. Again you are screwing into end grain (the toothpicks are like tiny dowels), only now you've interspersed glue which is even worse at holding a screw. I've spent many happy hours re-repairing screw joints that have had all kinds of imaginative stuff stuck into them and joints that have been broken by over-large replacement screws. Fixing it right takes about three minutes longer than a hack job and lasts many decades longer.

Jo, thanks for the new glue idea. I'll look for it. Being the impatient sort, I went ahead and tried the GG. Bought it 2-3 yrs. ago and hadn't tried it yet. Looks like it worked and it filled in the small gaps that were there. If it ultimately fails, will try the other. I'm psyched to try new sculpture incorporating glass mosaic, so want to get this finished up.

GG will last about three years if there is no air in the bottle or you can freeze it.
It likes moisture so if you dampened your cement a bit before using you should have a very strong joint.
GG is very strong just can be messy.:)

I used GG to glue wooden finials to cement spheres with flat tops that I made with those little carnival fishbowls.
(I was making fence post toppers). The glue worked really, really well. I didn't clamp them together and when the glue bubbled up the finials drifted and now they're attached forever. Only one is badly askew. I'll be sure to clamp when I make a replacement.

My fav GG story was writing to the company to tell them that I used GG to repair the broken fingers on the concrete hands in the garden (hands were made by filling latex gloves w/ concrete) ....WELL - they missed the concrete part - were stunned to hear I had repaired broken fingers with GG - and sent me a GG t-shirt as some kind of reward!

Still giggling about that everytime I hear the name GG mentioned.

Susan, You can use Gorilla Glue. I've also used Liquid Nails and mortar mix.
