Help! All my poor trees are dying!

Well, not all of them, but I do have a few that seem to have the same problem. My camera didn't cooperate with me today, so I only have pictures of one tree. This one is a 'Black York' cherry on 'Mazzard' rootstock. I also have a pecan tree and some other trees that are doing the same thing. Anyway, here are the pictures of the cherry tree. It was doing great last year with no sign of problems. This year, it started out looking like the others, but then never grew full sized leaves. Now my other cherry trees look normal, but this one looks like it's in trouble. Does anyone know what's wrong and what I can do to fix the problem?

That looks a lot like delayed damage from Roundup -- in cases like this, it was applied the previous fall/winter.

If so, whether or not the tree will recover can only be known by waiting.

Thank you so much for your reply. I did use RoundUp around the tree, but I was very careful not to get any on the foliage. I don't even think any got on the trunk because I always use a cardboard shield when spraying near the trunk. I also only spray when there is no wind. If this is RoundUp damage, what am I doing wrong? I sure hope I haven't killed my trees!

Like Dan alluded to, I'm a little uncertain about some of your facts. Here are some questions that might help us: 1. How much water are these trees getting? And, how often are you watering them? Have you tested the soil moisture levels at an appropriate depth to see how much water is needed? 2. Why is there no grass around the trees (especially in that last picture)? 3. Is your soil compacted? I sure get that feeling when I look at the pictures. 4. It may be a little late now, but why haven't you mulched around the trees? 5. Why have the trees been hacked back so awfully? Were the limbs dead?

Don't know about the leaf edge -- how many are that way? But I do know the bumps -- that's scale. A highly refined horticultural oil will work but be certain to follow directions exactly.

They really aren't going to like being in full sun. if you can, I'd cut away the dead growth and move them to a part-shade location. If they are only a foot tall, they ought to be easy to dig out since the root ball will be shallow.

Even though you were careful, the trees received some of the chemical. Spray turbulence is adequate to propel the spray where you don't want it to go.

As was said re recovery, only time will tell. DON'T try to speed things along with pruning and/or fertilizer.
