Help with armature

I am still trying to get started on the first of 4 larger planters that I need.

I spent a good bit of time Sunday and last night trying to get chicken wire on the form (a black plastic nursery pot). Because it's a tapered form I can't get it on without large gaps. If it's tight at the bottom it's loose at the top.

In other posts it's been mentioned to use fiberglass webbing. Is that drywall tape? Does it go directly on the form or on top of plastic covering the form?

At this point I'm afraid the elephant ears will outgrow these pots before I ever get them made.

Is that nursery pot rigid? If not you'll have to stuff something in it to keep it from collapsing from the weight of the cement mix.
To use dry wall tape you put a layer of the mix on the nursery pot then the dry wall tape then another layer of cement mix.
If you use the wire, cut it to shape the pot! Cut a circle for the bottom then a length wise piece for the wall. Just crimp (smoosh)the chicken wire to comform to the bottom of the pot before attaching to the bottom. Smooshing will eliminate the gaps. Billie

Why don't you just make the tufa pot on the inside of the nursery pot? It would be easier and you can texture the outside of the pot once it's unmolded.

well, the product arrived. Opened the box and it is called rustech corrosion control for rusted metal. NOw when I called this company (number from quest) they assured me they carrieds it. Received this product and immedialtely called. They said,1st, we just put our name on their bottle.Then when questiond some more, they said that they make their own product. and it is better than restore. Well, of course they would say that. I sadi well , I though you were a distributor of the quest product. Thay are but (surprise) do not carry this one. Told him other people are paying $10 for bottle and he found that unbelievable. Can return this if I so desire. What is the consensus on this. Should I try it. I mean I already have it, or should I return it and try and fins someplace else. I will not have time to search until next week thanks dian I do feel as though I was misled initially.They should have told me they were selling me their product. Gona give quest another call tango, do you think The place in Texas will ship to PA this place was not too far from me.

The 1st reply was absolutely correct.You should've left the armature bolted down.A light sanding was all it needed.I learned the hard way too along time ago.Tecumsehs can be a pain in the butt.If you were to take it in to a small engine repair shop they could set it for you while you have it apart.It would'nt take them more than a couple minutes.Any place worth their salt would do it for free. Not too late. Since you mention snow, so your growing season hasn't even started yet. They will probably put in good growth this year, since last year was when you had just transplanted them. Bushes don't grow as dramatically fast as annual plants, but after each month passes by until next autumn, you'll realize the bush has been growing and fills in well. When there is lack of funds, then you can just use the manual way. Get a hoe and start tilling the ground. When the grass reappears, pull them or hoe again. Pruning to keep a certain shape, or just to remove the longish branches and make the plant look more even, will help if you want that. If you like the natural look, then just prune to keep the plant looking nice but don't need to worry about symmetry or shape.

Just use the wire by itself. no need for the pot.

I will have these same questions, I am sure. club53 asked why don't you make the pot on the INSIDE of the nursery pot? If you do that, you get a smaller pot! Why bother? The outside of the pot becomes the INSIDE of the tufa pot, so the size is right.

That's only one opinion, and it's mine. I would have to purchase HUGE pots to make a 30 gallon pot (for trees)if I used the INSIDE, so I'm paying close attention to the advice in this thread.

Actually I ended up making my pot inside the original pot. The end result is going to work just fine and is a huge pot in it's own right. I'm using a cheapo black nursery pot that is about 30 gallon size I believe. The finished tufa pot is not all that much smaller. They are definately big enough for a citrus tree. I've got two done and will be making the last one (of this style) later tonight.

I'm so happy that Club53 made that suggestion. Sometimes the simplest things just escape you when you are trying so hard that you end up over thinking it. It worked great and made the process easier and sooo much quicker.
