Sick Christmas Cactus
Comments (1)Hi VG, You'll need a photo-hosting site like Photobucket.com or Flicker (both are free), post your photos there & from there into here. I use Photobucket so I can speak to that, but basically AFTER you've uploaded your pix there, you'd cut & paste the THIRD LINE of code into a post you start here. It'll look like gibberish at first, but when one hits Preview, it should be the image you selected. It may a time or two to get it....See MoreHelp with Christmas Cactus please?
Comments (14)You bet! Now is not the best time of year to re-pot plants, just want to make sure you know that up front. But since you're going to re-pot, here are some tips to make the transition smoother. Moisten the Orchid Mix thoroughly before using - be sure that the bark has absorbed moisture. You may also want to soak the root-ball to help remove as much of that old soil as possible. Try not to tear roots....just soak and then gently loosen with a chopstick or skewer :-) Josh...See MoreChristmas cactus help needed please!!
Comments (2)Hi, Stef, how much light is it getting? I have mine as close to an east/southeast window as possible. Once we are further into the Spring, re-potting into a porous and free-draining mix will really help this plant. Removing the old potting mix is going to be a chore, but it will revitalize the plant. Comments (3)I don't remember if Meijer's has a good plant return policy - it might be worth a shot. Honest mistake, right? Personally, I would take it back and try to get a healthier one that doesn't need 'saving'. Fixing the soil will give it a good chance of recovery, but the stretched-out (etoliated) growth is unfortunately permanent. You do seem to have some enthusiasm and interest though! A good soil is very important for succulents. Here is an example of a simple soil mix I made for a friend's plant the other night. It is probably 75% large perlite (sifted with a kitchen sieve to remove dust/small bits) and 25% cactus & succulent soil (which should be easy for her to care for): If you're looking for something even better for succulents indoors, but a bit more involved, you can try something like this gritty mix. This is the closest type of plant I have to yours. =) The soil mix is a very well draining and aerated combination of what's in the three pots shown below: grit, Turface (clay), and bark. Also realized I might be wrong on the species! It might be a Graptopetalum? I really don't grow this specific kind (although care is similar to the ones I do own). Others around the forums likely will know....See Moremicke
