It's a girl!

Actually, it looks like it's a couple of girls. The plants on my one zucchini hill are huge, leaves several inches across, and the plants on the hill stretch at least 2-3 feet wide. I noticed several flower buds already. Usually I have to watch male zucchini flowers come and go before the females decide to put in an appearance, but today I noticed that at least two flower buds are decidedly female. One's on the Black Eel and the other, I think, is a Ronde de Nice. I have a third plant in the same grouping, which must be the 8 Ball, but it's lagging behind.

Girl blossoms already! Cool! This might be the year that I get to make zucchini boats.

Good luck. Sounds like you have difficulties with it in general. I can never a good crop of summer-squash of any type in the florida garden either. Always gets some kin of mildew or blight.

Here in new england around this time it becomes a struggle to keep eating it. Got three monster zukes lurking in the kitchen right now......

Good news! Maybe those girls were just being selective so they waited a bit to make a good catch.

CONGRATS!! I used the wooden sticks last year and at first found the ink labels "run" once the water wicked up the wood. THEN, once in my garden, the sun "cooked" off the ink labels. I also used sharpie on the plastic sticks and also had the sun erase my markings. Since I failed to map my plantings, I had no idea what was what!! Always rewarding to have the little seeds sprout:))

Thank you all:) I am feeling fine. I finally have a little energy back! I have started the freaky cleaning of everything...hahaha. Jonathan was sitting on the couch watching me wipe the blinds last night and said "and so it begins...." Ima-twins do run in his family but on the sonogram they only found one so unless we get a SERIOUSLY big surprise theres only one this time around. (thank god:) Sweeby- Everyone has already started on the girlie clothes buying freanzy. LOL. I have gotten alot of compliments on the name too. I think we picked a good one. My friend said it sound's a little hippie/rockerish but really girlie at the same time. That was precisely what we were going for!

my favorite for zuks is to let them grow all season and become like a winter squash. Harvest late and use them. They will keep a fairly long time and give you seeds for the next year. the white flesh is good cooked up firm.
