Hello All. I will purchase bamboo from netherland for future growing in my house for future landing in my garden. I'm living nearby Kiev city. It's too late to landing bamboo right now. With light I should use for growing bamboo? 1. General use HPS? 2. HPS for growing (more light in blue area spectrum). 3. General use metal halide. 4. Metal halide for growing. I'm expect that number 2 is the best choise but it's only because I'm think that the green spectrum in light do noting for growing. And sodium lamp have no ultraviolet light (or have much less) that MH. So it's no smell ozone or nitrogen oxides.

Note: Simply rule of thumb - the bigger the leaves, the less light the bamboo need. This is extremely helpful to know when growing bamboo indoors. Runners: Arrow Bamboo - Psuedosasa japonica - by far the best bamboo to grow indoors. Green Onion - Pseudosasa japonica Palmata Bamboo - Sasa palmata Black Bamboo - Phyllostachys nigra

I've got three potted boos - one indoor and 2 outdoor. For all I started with a layer of black cinder and broken terra cotta pottery shards in the bottom 2 inches of the pot. Then I mixed 1 part standard potting soil with 1/2 part black cinders and about 1/4 part vermiculite for the rest of the pot. I fertilized initially with a light Miracle Grow solution once a week. Then about 3 weeks later sprinkled bone meal per package instructions to encourage root development. When they are actively putting out culms I sprinkle blood meal(high nitrogen) per package instructions about once every 2 weeks. I'm no expert on boos, but my outdoor boos are doing great. The indoor one is having trouble. It puts out culms but they grow very slowly and don't get very tall. Good luck!

I have the same question but different species. Rather than making a new post, Ill tag along in this post. I have red margin bamboo and b. gracillis in containers on my patio. I would like to bring one of them indoors for an indoor plant. Which will do better indoors? The ceiling in my house where the plant would be is about 16 feet. It gets limited lighting.
