Probably stupid question on Artichoke

Hi,

I grew cardoon and artichokes (green globe and a hardy purple type) from seed this year starting in January. The plants were doing good till I went away 1 week late june and my artichokes pretty much disappeared on many of the plants. The ones that were left have only a few center leaves left (outerleaves just disapeared) others only had the roots in the ground. The weather was hot - well over 85 (probably 90s) for a while - but the soil was not dry. Several of the ones left seem to have the leaves slowly withering away. Did my artichokes die? Or can I be optimistic and think they just went dormant?

Cardoons are still hanging in there.

Thanks!
