Can you identify this fruit tree?

I am restoring an heirloom pear orchard. We found a deciduous tree with reddish yellow leaves just breaking. There are dried up red balls on the limbs from the last season. Mostly likely it was planted in about 1868 with the pears in Sonoma County. It is probably some kind of edible fruit tree

but I have never seen one like this.

It could bean american persimmon or even a crab apple, but I'd like to know more. The size of the red balls? Bark texture? Height of tree? Type of land? Basically anything you can add helps. Especially photos.

medlar maybe?

though I doubt it. More probably a Strawberry Tree species, Arbutus genus.

"Walnut or relation" = Juglans species or perhaps even another genus, although first off you should compare yours for instance with J. cinerea, which produces some quite similar leaves and fruits. There are also numerous examples of more than one Asian walnut species on West Coast properties, these are more like butternut than English walnut and the several species of black walnuts. People I've talked with who were occupying sites up here with landmark butternuts or Asian walnuts on them have never known what the trees were, one party came up with the name "white walnut".

Don't eat that thing!!! Clusia rosea is a tree found in the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Hispaniola (such as in Los Haitises National Park), Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Florida. The tree produces a fleshy, light green but poisonous fruit; once the fruit has split, the seeds are favored by birds and other wildlife. This plant is cultivated as an ornamental plant, for its flowers, foliage, and fruit. It is planted in gardens as a fruiting and ornamental tree in sub-tropical climates, and used as a houseplant in many climates. Can you post a photo, or a link to a photo? It'd be interesting if peanuttree is right on the medlar guess. Incidently, do you know what William Cobbett said about the Medlar in his 'American Gardener' (which was first published in London in 1821)? He said:

'MEDLAR.
A very poor thing indeed. The Medlar is propagated by grafting on crab-stocks, or pear-stocks. It is, at any rate, especially in this country, a thing not worthy of a place in a garden. At best, it is only one degree better than a rotten apple.'

To me it sounds more like a Pomegranate. The fruit will often hang on through the winter and they are just putting out new leaf growth in this area. Al
