I just wanted to share my gardenias with my friends here since my little one has popped two new flowers today!

I will also take another of my big one at work that is just starting to pop more flowers.

I did take pictures of it in the last couple of weeks, and this little one I just had to take pictures of tonight.

Thanks for looking. I only wish you could smell the fragrance so needed for me at this time of the year. Another miracle!

Hello all! Now Petrushka, I must say AMAZING and you must love every plant you have just as much as they love you:-) It shows. Toni! How do you do that????You got your Aloe to flower and I too have been trying for years. There is some interested in farming near me but that is usually fruits and vegetables. There are some gardening groups that meet in Northern Virginia. I went to a plant swap last year and meet some Native plant only people that were a little annoying(sorry to say). They gave me a hard time about out of zone gardening and called my Yucca Rostrata seedlings that I was sharing invasive. I would love for this species to invade my gardens but unfortunately that will not happen. Maybe I will try again soon. Brad - You should try to include other bears in some of your plant pics. It would be cool to see their different get ups. Regarding your Carnosa, Nikki... I think it is a large enough size to bloom for you. An observation that I made with my Carnosa this year was that when they climbed I was rewarded with penducles galore. I have one that was growing next to a trellis that never bloomed. This summer a few vines grabbed hold and climbed to the top and each of those vines had 3 penducles where there were none before. I also grew 2 other carnosa in close proximity of each other. They spent this summer tangling up with each other and attempting to climb into the tree that they were hanging from. Both these carnosas now have penducles and have bloomed. My only carnosa that haven't bloomed are the hanging varieties such as Compacta, Compacta Variegata, and 'Chelsea'. My next project, I will be building something to hang my hoyas on that is topped with a trellis that they can grab onto and climb up. I think they will enjoy this and I will be able to dress it up so it looks very nice inside and outside. Good luck growing everyone. -David

my3dogs, you have a beautiful home! That chair looks perfect, and it was amazing that OSH brought it to you. How many of us get that kind of service? She posted something in Hot Topics that was interpreted in a way that she didn't intend it, and she was temporarily banned. It seems she often had her remarks misinterpreted. I find it interesting that an English prof has such a hard time expressing herself in a way that readers will understand her correctly. I have no idea what went on over at Hot Topics, but whatever happened to freedom of speech? While this forum is open to the public, we are all guests here and expected to abide by GW rules. GW says you can't insult someone or attack them personally. If you want freedom of speech start your own blog. I remember OSH as being a very pleasant contributor here on the Decorating board, and enjoyed her posts. However on the Hot Topics board she was like a different person. I think she became a little too passionate about issues leading up to our recent election. She WAS nasty to me, and others. I don't think she is a bad person - quite the contrary. She seems to be a soft-hearted woman. She just has problems controlling herself if you disagree with her. Nicole

Mehitabel wrote the following post entitled "One season's lessons about growing gardenias" Posted by mehitabel z6 MO (My Page) on Wed, Sep 24, 03 at 20:20 What I have found is that gardenias for the most part are vigorous plants that get fat and happy in pots if conditions are the least good. I wanted to share my experience with them this summer, because I was very much hesitant to even try one after reading all the stories of slow decline. But my experience has not matched that, except with a couple of plants, and I hope this will encourage other people to try them. The blooms are beautiful and fragrant, and cut well. The one I bought from HD (the first) has not done well, but I attribute that to the source-- several plants in one pot forced into bloom for valentines day. These are bound to drop buds, sulk etc when you get them home and maybe never get going properly. I found the best plants for getting established quickly as pot plants are vigorous varieties like Belmont or Miami Supreme. Also, potbound plants are harder to get established and you need to check the rootball to make sure they are getting their roots into the new soil. Naturally, in-ground plants would be another matter. Put them in a pot no more than 2" bigger than the rootball. Use a clay pot if you can. They keep the roots cooler, and I have always found roots in clay to grow much better. Let the roots fill up the pot (but not potbound) before repotting. You can tell because it starts to need water more often. A good peat based potting soil (I use moisture control miracle gro) with timed release fertilizer and dry ironite in it gives it a good environment. You can add peat, but I've had some without added peat that did fine. The timed release fertilizer evens out the fertilizer, and the dry ironite gives a lot of micronutrients and prevents the leaves from getting chlorotic. You can give it some bloom-booster (10-50-10) maybe once a month or so. I also give mine epsom salts (source of magnesium) and liquid iron chelate once a month or so to supply micronutrients. You can give it oftener than that if you need to. Keeps the leaves beautiful. Outside in summer, they get just the right amount of humidity and will thrive. They happily take sun til app 2 in the afternoon all summer. If you get aphids, just hose them off every couple of days for 3 or 4 times. Or just wash off with soapy water. Be careful of overwatering, overpotting and overfertilizing. I tend to overwater, so I use a moisture meter to test need for water, or stick your finger in and water when the soil starts to dry. But don't let them get too dry, either. Gardenias are susceptible to root disease, and any of the above no-no's can get it started. Inside in winter they are going to get stressed because the humidity in the house and perhaps the light you can provide is too low. The way to deal with this is to keep them outside as much as possible. They can be kept out at temperatures below a light frost, so they can stay out probably a month after the first light frost, and go out in the spring about when the crocuses come up, or about St Pat's day. Indoors, give them the sunniest window you have. In late winter, watch out for bug explosions. Aphids give birth to pregnant young in spring, so populations can explode in a few days. Wash these off. You don't need poisons. So far this year, I have successfully grown Grif's Select, Miami Supreme, Belmont, Shooting Star. I killed August Beauty (never thrived) and Four Seasons (root disease, but not sure how I triggered it-- repotted too soon, maybe). I also have some small ones I bought a few weeks ago, too soon to tell. This is probably not a complete summary, just an outline of what I have discovered. But summing it up: NO, they aren't hard if you give them exactly what they want (moist rich soil, warmth, sun) and keep the pests and root disease at bay as outlined above. I hope this encourages someone to try them, or try again. Good luck

Hey everybody! Thanks so much for the kind words and all the help I have gotten to be able to accomplish such a feat!

As you know, these plants especially, can be one of the HARDEST plants to keep happy all winter and I am just grateful they even stayed alive..

Here is another one took this morning that is popping all over in blooms.

Toni: Thank you. I have had that one since last spring. I trimmed it down to almost nothing last summer in the hopes of being able to have room to keep it on my window sill, and never thought I would even see the light of day with buds. Just goes to show you you can never be afraid to give short haircuts to many plants. I think the color looks darker than it really is with a false. I took another pic this morning with sunlight reaching it. It is posted second:-)

They're gorgeous, Mike! The flowers are very beautiful, and also very interesting in form!

Once I feel I have a decent enough environment to collect and grow things like citrus, I'll definitely add a few to my plant collection... but for now, I have to stick with plants that can deal with my indoor conditions and space. Don't worry, Mike... I plan to make a few changes in the near future, which should allow for a greater variety of plant material.

The proof is in the pictures, Mike... great growing! You're using your knowledge well! :-)

How are you able to wet these plants indoors? Many seem large and I can't imagine how you are keeping them wet. Are you hosing them down, somehow?

Are they growing in your house?

I wish I could rinse my plants the way you do. But our water leaves them spotted!

I, too, adore those flower buds on the trunk... the plant seems very willing to bloom!

That's an issue with our water, too, JoJo... hard well water tends to leave small mineral deposits behind. Rain water is a good alternative, though probably a bit easier to come by in my area than in yours! :-)

Again, Mike... great application of that knowledge! Your plants look healthy, happy, and hydrated! :-)

Yes, Jodi~ rain is a lot easier to come by in your area than mine! lol!
I am getting 2 more rain barrels, 50 gallons each this season. So I could probably take a little to clean up plants. ;-)

I've been hours trying to clean up a bay leaf tree! Oh the water deposits are awful! I just bought it. Using bottled water..lol!
