Opinions on plants for nursing home patients: I need advice.

Hello, all.

I'm trying to decide on some good plants to raise for the surrounding nursing homes' patients as a community project. I would like to plant these in recycled cans, if possible, so I need some plants with the following qualities:

-nontoxic

-easy care

-blooming (I think the flowers would be really good for some of the patients who don't get to go outside much)

-abuse tolerant

-compact growers

I was thinking maybe begonias or impatiens. I've never grown either of these as window-plants, though, so I'm not sure. I hope to get some feedback. Please suggest, or maybe brain storm with me?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate all the help I can get!

Thanks again! - Kait

PS. I was also thinking of planting something for the children's hospital/orphanages. Do you think this is a good idea?
