Questions about Pachira Aquatica (Money Tree)

I just recently got a money tree and absolutely love it. It is starting to grow like crazy now and the leaves are starting to get crowded. I was wondering how I should prune the plant, how often I should water it, how much light it should get, and how to maintain the plant as it gets bigger. Also, do the stems braid themselves or do you have to braid it yourself?

I was hoping to have a tall version of this

Hehe, it doesn't braid itself. You have to continue that if you want it to keep growing that way. I think you just bend it and tie it in place..
I am not an "expert"!
Moderate amount of bright indirect light and I believe it likes water about..once a weekish. It's one of those that needs good drainage and can dry out a bit between waterings.
I am almost positive this is all correct advice. But there are people on here who actually own money trees and they can give you more involved advice. I just saw that no one had responded yet and wanted to let you know you're not being ignored!

If you don't ever repot, the expanding root system will eventually die and cannot hold water if most of the soil is eventually used up. Of course you have to repot, just do it carefully.

I just removed 2 dead trunks out of the 5 that came in the pot when i bought it. I was inspecting the plant and noticed bark missing on one of the trunks, so i felt it and it was mushy. I just carefully removed the wire holding the braid and pulled the dead trunks out without disturbing the roots from the other trunks(I hope). I kinda just snapped it off at the bottom. I did it today so we will see how it does in the coming days/weeks. I'm wondering if it was a mistake to just snap the trunk at the bottom and pull out the dead wood pieces?

If the humidity level is high enough, the fan won't be a problem, but if it's sub-40%, it will be. I'm not sure how you have your plant set up for drainage, but at least one hole should be through the bottom at some point. Even if the holes in the sides are 1/8" above the bottom - that's a problem. There should be no way the effluent that exits the drain hole should have a pathway back into the pot. If it was my plant, I'd be using a wick to assist drainage, I'd water it over the sink, then tip the pot at a 45* angle with the wick hanging down from the lowest point in the pot bottom (as though you tipped figure E 45* to the right)until the planting stops draining. 3 weeks between waterings is a certain indicator you're leaving a lot of your plant's potential untapped. Another way of saying that is, 3 weeks between waterings is a sure indication there is a significant degree of limitation in play due to an overly water-retentive soil. You would be doing well to flush the soil and fertilize with regularity, and plan a full repot (as opposed to potting up) into a medium that allows you to water correctly. Al

I don't own a money tree, but I wish I did. I've seen them in stores, but my mother used to have one and it went downhill really fast (sorry...probably shouldn't say that) but since then I've been afraid to buy one 'cause I don't like buying plants if I don't think I can give them the proper care.

Oh...hum. Well, that's not very advise-y-ish now is it? *Squeak* Sorry...

But did you know, if I'm not mistaken, that money trees are part of feng-shui (sp) I think and they're supposed to bring you good luck with money. Best of luck with the plant! If it does really well, maybe I'll give one a shot. We could be money tree pals!!

Just out of curiosity, who here actually puts forth the effort to braid the stems as it grows out?

- the grower? ;)

I certainly don't! Braided trunks, in my opinion, are nothin' but trouble...! I've seen *multi-trunk* plantings do well, but never *braided trunk* plantings.
