The plants look good and healthy, but do appear to need to grow a bit more. Hopefully your are is cool enough for them to grow in the summertime, They don't show any signs of heat stress at this point. This why variety is important, some will begin heading with two months of transplanting others can take 4 months or longer.

Wow, I had no idea that they could take 4 months! I may have gotten them in late if they are going to take that long.

They are calling for weather in the mid 90's by Sunday. I read somewhere that you can help them in really warm weather by watering them often to keep the roots cool, so I guess I will try that. We have had unseasonably warm weather here this year (I am in northeastern PA).

You can also mulch with straw to keep the soil cool (leave it off the eggplant - they love the warm soil).
Next year, plant broccoli as soon as soil can be worked. Mine went outside in early April and tolerated freezes right down to 14 degrees F. The biggest head I got this year was from one of those plants. Seedlings started indoors do have to be hardened off first by exposure to 30-40 degree nights for a week or so.

IME, you want the plant to grow as large as possible before heading. There is a correlation between the plant and head size. In general, and for a given cultivar, the larger the plant, the larger the head.

Your broccoli looks very similar to mine (Calabrese). I've got one plant that is starting to develop a head. It takes 60-90 days from transplant to maturity and mine have been in the garden about 45 days. If I have a full head in two weeks, I'll have one happy wife!

Ugh, I think I am ready to call it quits on the broccoli. We are having a heat wave and when I went out to water the garden yesterday evening, I found the broccoli leaves all chewed full of holes from cabbage white butterfly caterpillars. :-( I hand picked off all I could find, but they are the exact same color as the leaves, so very hard to see. I guess I will just keep trying to pick them off every night. I'm not sure the effort is worth it, temps are in the high 90's to 100's, so the brocolli isn't doing real well anyway.

Pull them things or the rest of your carrots,peppers,eggplants etc will not get the necessary sunlight to prosper, those plants are still babies and will get a lot bigger...

even if they don't make a big head, they'll make a medium one, and keep on making side shoots all season...i pull unproductive cauliflower, but never broccoli
