Mature, young, abused plants. What's your pref. and sucess?

meyermike_1micha

I have been wondering this for quite sometime.

Please share your experiences with us and which your drawn to.

From my own experience, it seems like the plants I have the most succeess with are ones that I have brought home that were on the brink of death, need help, give aways from friends, or blow out sales from stores that think they do not look good enough to sell..lol

It is usually the beat up ones, or neglected ones that I seem to be able to bring back to better health than when I bought it.To a perfect state. Sort of a reincarnation thing.

To it seems like, I have better luck with smaller plants bringing them to maturity over the years. For

For some reason if I buy a healthy looking mature tree or plant anywhere, I struggle trying to keep it looking as good as it did when I bought it. Many times they rebel, don't look as nice, or fuss for a long while, but eventually give in...

The younger version of the same plants seem to do extremely well for me as they mature through the years.

For example, my small gardenias do outandingly well for years, even when just prchased, as compared to a full grown mature specimen.

Therefore, I tend to shy away from huge healthy plants raised from someone else unless it is a give away or needs help, reduced priced, or a baby..:-) I bought a 1 year old "pink lady" philo and a 3 year old one, and the older one is not doing as well. Go figure. I bough a couple 5 year old clivias, and a few seedlings at the same time 3 years ago, and the seedlings took off as compared to the older ones.

The easiest plant I have success with no matter how old is a CITRUS tree.

How about you? What is your preference?

    Hi girls!!!

Yes, what a great deal...I will learn to take pics as soon as possible!

Toni, my tropicals are fine, it is the ones at that greenhouse that wern't because it was SOOOOO cold in there.

I felt bad for them. I wanted to rescue them all. It looks like they are hanging on, but boy, they look sad..They can't afford to heat that greenhouse up more than the 40's....One night last year, their heater went out and half there plants were lost to a deep overnight freeze. Some cactus as old as 50 or more years...

Jojo, I can't wait to everyone here these..I brought them to work to keep them warm, and everyone was shocked and amazed at how different they are. There is a guy that owns his own florist shop here, and offered to buy this jade for 50 dollars...lol

I will take pics and let you all know when I do...God, if anyone wants a healthy looking unique plant for a steal, let me know, and I just may go back for you...I may take pics there and let you see them all..lol

    Mike.....:-)

    Sucession corn?

    Q

    Comments (7)
I just re-read the link and I guess it does sound a little confusing how it's written there, but basically the reason for the 3 seeds per hole and thinning to 2 was mainly because we live in a windy area in Northern Arizona and the roots of the stalks link together like your fingers would if you criss-crossed them so they help the corn keep from blowing over, especially because they are shallow-rooted when they are young. Two stalks still come up side by side so I know it works, and even if you live in an area that's not really windy, I don't see why the same principle wouldn't work??? And you then get more corn for the space! Regarding the simple math, it's one foot apart in your row, with 4 feet between rows, so in a 4x4 area you'd have 2 rows of 8 plants per row -- but I know he suggested that at least 4 rows is ideal if you can spare the room. Then, between the 4-foot rows is where you can plant your squash, pumpkins etc. When Bryan told me to plant pole beans when the corn was a foot high and that they'd use the corn stalks as a fence to grow on I thought he was nuts, but it worked and was awesome!!! Make sure you have good soil and you amend and fertilize though because corn can really deteriorate your soil because it's such a heavy feeder.

Despite the original posters overly extensive post, with certain questionable content, the central point is still quite vaild. We as a nation spend more money on grass than on any other crop. That by itself should be reason enough. Read up on the history of lawns and you'll find that they were orginally created as a means of demonstrating wealth (aka, I have this big area and I can afford to do nothing with it except grow grass I can't eat) Regarding the comments of junegem13 and zachslc, you might want to read up on the legal history of this movement. As it turns out, most weed laws (ones based on hight, not on noxious weeds) are unconstitutional. Nonetheless, if you are in a city or subdivision and decide to do a wildflower meadow where there is not an reasonable ordinance, then you should notify your neighbors and the city about why you are doing and the legal preceedants. The EPA has all this information. Regarding property values, that was the original complaint neighbors made against one landowner when she converted her lawn into meadow. When they were unable to demonstrate an actual decrease in property values, the city ordinance was ruled unconstitutional. Afterwards, the neighbors decided if they couldn't beat her that they'd join her and replace their own yards with meadows. Property values in that one neighborhood are now some of the highest in the city (Specific names and places, are available if you want them). Time and time again, lawn alternatives done correctly have shown to raise values, not lower them. In Charlottesville, VA local government is working on an ammendment to exclude native meadows from our weed ordinance. Other cities are doing the same very quicky, especially since the weed ordinance as written by many localites constitutes a legal liability to local governments.

Hope no one minds if I give part two of my prior post from May 16. The one where I bought Optimara Modesty. Remember she was one of 3 violets in the Lowe's that day. Well I went back to Lowe's today and those same two violets were still there. Last time I saw them was on May 16 when I bought Modesty. Oh you should have seen them. I think they may be circleing the drain. There leaves are so limp they just hang over the pot. I felt so bad for them I took them over to a decorative fountain and let the water run over the soil on both of them. At least that would help until I was done with grocery shopping. Yes,,,,,,I asked the lady to reduce them and bought them both. Poor things. But guess what I noticed when I got to the car? The white one was tagged Ontario! Could it be Optimara Ontario???? Becha it is! The other one had deep purple blooms with little white flecks on it. They are both in the intensive care unit right now. Well if they don't make it I will take them back for a refund. Thank goodness Lowe's does that. I know it was stupid and they may die anyway but,,,,well, I guess I have no more to say about it. Rosie

Thanks Silvia! You're wonderful! Did y'all have any luck with the stuff I sent you? I'm trying to remember what I sent. Cilantro? Arugula? I'm so ready to have fresh arugula all the time again. I've tried it in pots in the shade, but my shade is so far from where I remember to water that it hasn't worked very well. I had one pot that somehow produced well by accident, from late-set seeds that got stuck out in the shade to avoid the termite tent in early June. Surprised me when I found Arugula in July that was light-colored from the shade, but tasty, tender and not at all bitter from the heat. So I figured I'd try more shady arugula, but then I forgot to water and got nothing. The green zebra I'm trying this year is from you, along with some ground cherries I'm really looking forward to and the green cherry doctor and coure di bue you sent me. I have extra Arkansas Traveler if you're interested. And some interesting hot peppers. Bellingrath Purple and Hungarian Wax (a hot banana.) I know I bought both because they were supposed to be good for our climate, and I'm going to try again this year with them, but I didn't have any luck last year. Want to try them? In looking at the seed box, I also have an Ecuadorean Aji from you I'm looking forward to. And some acorn and delicata squash, but as I recall, you already grow those. Let me know what I can send you in return. Susannah

Hey everyone! I tend to buy smaller plants, as I like to see how well I can help it grow. And like JoJo I enjoy getting baby plants because theyÂre just so darn cute!

I have not tried trees yet because as Mike stated, I'd be afraid that it would not well in my home and would probably look its best when I bought it. Plus its lots more money. I recently bought a Bohdi Tree (very small still) and a var. ficus which was breathtaking (very small, it has many stems so I hope that later in the summer I can seperate the trunks to make multiple different trees. We'll see...

I also LOVE to buy reduced or sick looking plants. My friends all say I'm very nurturing so I guess that explains why I love getting sickly plants in top form again! I've had good luck with a lot of my reduced finds, though I do stay away from the plants that are just too far gone :( The bonus is that theyÂre cheap and look beautiful within a couple of months, though. :D

Hi Mike! You scored on all those plants! Can't wait to see the photos!

Hey there JoJo! I recently got a port A. as well. I started to have the idea of making this a bonsai but I repotted during the winter and got lots of leaf drop. Josh really helped me out with this plant, thanks Josh! Most of the leaves are plump now and I've had very little leaf drop within the past couple of weeks. :) I'll share photos with you later!

Hey Pug! I know what you mean, the weather here in TX has been crazy as well. The temps are staying in the 50's and lower at night. We just had the crazy/wonderful snowstorm; I've never seen it snow all day non-stop in TX before.

Houseplant, I also love to propagate my plants and tend to do this probably too often for my own good. No wonder I run out of pots and soil so quickly! ;)

Hey Toni, I still don't think I'd move to IL,lol...too many plants to put in the UHaul and that's not counting all the ones I have to dig up from the gound!

I leave the Jades outside as long as the temps is not forecasted to be 32° or below. I bring them inside when rain is in the forecast also. I know that rain/cold is NOT good for Jades. I've learned my lesson...since I left mine outside in the rain for weeks and it rotted. I'm being a lot more careful now. Funny, my hummel turns green in the summer and yours turn the pretty colors,lol...we're opposites!

Mike I am looking forward to pictures of your wonderful great bargain plants...especially the pretty red jade! Please learn your new computer quickly,lol...we're all waiting for those pictures.

    You too Jojo...we want pics!

Hi Ashley, good to see you! Yes, we have had some crazy winter. I cannot wait for Spring!

Mike...I'm sorry you can't load pictures yet...SO, since I'm so anxious to see your two jades...please send them to me so that I can take a good, long look at them. I will/maybe/maybe not return them to you shortly. Truthfully, try REALLY hard to post the pictures of the two jades...I'm dying to see what that red one looks like..as well as the yellow with red...they sound awesome. Congratulations!! BTW...e-mail me for my address for shipping the jades!! LOL Fondly, Patrick

Ok, Mike, let's help you figure this out. We all want to see your pics! What kind of camera do you have, what kind of memory card does it use, and do you have a card reader? I'm thinking that you do not. There's probably a way to use a cable that came with your camera, but it usually involves downloading a program onto your computer. I just find it easier to use a card reader. They're generally not expensive (I think mine was about $25), and usually are able to read a variety of different memory cards. Just plug it into your USB port, put the card in the right slot, and it will show up on your screen as a drive or folder.

Oh, to join in the topic... I started out getting plants from the clearance section, had great success. Got away from houseplants for a while, then got sucked back into them in a big way when I got tired of winter and wanted something blooming, so I bought an African violet. Which are apparently like potato chips, you can never have just one. Ha.

I used to prefer getting more mature plants, so I could get blooms faster, or because it seemed that a more established plant would be more resilient. But now I prefer getting cuttings or baby plants, because I can get it used to my conditions, and my potting mix, right from the start. Also, they fit better ; ) I actually even feel this way about orchids. Sure, they may take longer to bloom, but they are used to what you provide for them. I'm starting to find that buying a mature orchid just isn't as fun, as there is no way I can duplicate the lovely greenhouse conditions it came from, and I inevitably see some decline before it gets accustomed enough to my conditions to recover. Which isn't to say that I wouldn't buy a mature plant if it caught my eye (well, except for the fact that I'm just about out of room.) But I'm doing better with my plantlets, cuttings, and seedlings, and enjoying them more.

    The above post,

    That was my mother's question...lol

Now, I just want to take a sec to say thank you to Quninnfyre for your advice..I am running out to Radio Shack today to get a card reader. My old delapitated computer, piece of junk, had a card reader already built into it, my Mac does not.:-(

I am taking more pics this am and hopefully you can see these weird, to me, looking plants.. By the time I probably figure it out, I will start a thread of something like this..Look what I got for 2 bucks each and extras..lol

You know what, the last statement of Quinnfyre is just about what I feel!
Even my mother seems to think it is easier to get smaller plants accustomed to our way of cultural practices, than mature ones that have spent many life times getting the perfect conditions they need to look the way we buy them, that is the pretty, healthy perfect ones... You are right, they start declining the minute you gets these at home, until they start to get use to our conditions..By then, they look like crap sometimes..If we can get past that stage, they do come back, but with many less leaves towards the bottom, less full, and a lot less blooms...

    My mothers thoughts on this..:-)

She is saying at this moment,

It is the same thing with animals. When you get a full grown animal, it will be harder to train it, because it already has it's likes and dislikes.

Not that it can't be done. Rescue animals being a perfect example.

But, if you get a young animal, such as a puppy, it is a lot easier to train it.

Then similarly, mature plants are accustomed to their own environment and may have difficulty adjusting to a new environment because of their likes and dislikes or years of their own environment..

It would seem easier to start with a young one, that can adapt a lot easier to the environment we provide from the start...

Therefore, it is easier for a younger plant to be trained and perform well in comparison. It will adjust easier than a full grown one for many people here...

Wow,what a great deal Mike. You are a lucky man. I bet that made your day...or week.

Hi Mike, I agree with the animal analogy...of course there are always exceptions to every rule, but I agree for me at least to buy younger plants and like you said...grow it in our own growing climate/conditions.

Now hurry up already and go to Radio Shack,lol...we want pictures :o)

Hi Pug from cold Mass to sunny Florida!!! :-)

As for the "hoyas". Not to make you feel bad houseplantlover, but they are selling them at my local HD a dime a dozen..All different kinds of them..:-(

    I hope you find one.

They can be an amazing plant to have..

I have one at work that is just too big to even get into a doorway at my home, or fit in my car to bring home.....
    The flowers smell like chocolate..

That one was givin to me by my friend who died of cancer, so I would remember her. It is a special plant..:-)

Mike, you misunderstood..I was asking why the tropicals in the florists, 'not yours' were dying..It must really be cold. Do they not heat the place?
You'd be surprised the number of tropicals that survive in cool to semi-cold rooms..as long as the soil isn't kept wet. Perhaps you can suggest either placing an electric heater, 'if they don't have gas,' or cutting down on water?

You got me so excited about HD..wonder if mine have hoyas..maybe I'll stop there this wk..lol A dime a dozen..wish you were speaking literally..lol

Pug, I know what you mean about moving..I would like to be closer to my family...but moving furniture, etc, is bad enough, but how would I ship all my plants?
They sell sleeves..When we moved here, I 'only' had 75, give or take, a few. I've considered a plant sale, but the problem is, can't find one plant I'm willing to part with.
Then there's the gh..Do we leave it? If I could find a place w/a built in solarium, the gh stays..hopefully, someone who likes plants would consider it a bonus.
As for outdoor plants, unlike you, there are very few perrenials I would really miss..Besides, I could always sneak a bulb or two..lol..'lilies.'
One other problem is, we live south of the city. My family live in Chicago, or further north..Even though we're 20-30 miles south, there is a difference in temp, especially wind. It's a little warmer here..most people wouldn't notice, but my body does..lol..

I love when our grocery store has 1.00 plant sales. Most plants are common, but every so often a rarity is available. It's just a matter of hunting through several batches, and getting to the store as soon as they're shipped..before someone else finds that one special plant.

It's been fun watching them grow all these years. The main thing I notice is the color of the new thorns. It's hard to belive at times they were only a few inches.

Christopher~ Thank you! :) Your right, I don't think they would like it where you are. :) They are like your snow, I admire it from a distance. he he...

Nancy~~Thanks...:) I am so sorry your so cold right now! It's nuts!!! It's crazy! And were warmer than the norm.

They're ALL lovely, but I particulaly like the orchid and red sux. Lucky you..Mike, keep the red succulent in the brightest light, otherwise leaves will revert to green..but the good news is, once they're outside, adapted to a direct-sun spot, they'll re-redden. Congrats..Toni

Jojo, seriously. I never even noticed the mess..lol. Your plants and those decorations are so appealing to look at. You are doing a good job in the conditions that Arizona has to offer..WOW

Yay, pics! Glad you got to show them to us! I really really like that red fuzzy one. My jade currently hates me, I have been, get this, underwatering it. Erg. It's been in a spot where I forget about it. And now it's in an in-limbo spot (I'm reorganizing.) Hopefully I can make it happy again, but I have to figure out where I'm going to put it. Right now, African violets, hoyas, and orchids are hogging all the room.

I really want to like the smell of those oncidiums, but it really gets to me. I had a pretty rose-pink flowered one, that I had in my room for a little while, but the smell started irritating me. It smells vaguely of chocolate or vanilla, but also had some other note that didn't sit well with me, so it moved downstairs, where I didn't have to live with the smell so much. Also, I didn't have to try and sleep with that smell. Some things are just nicer in small doses, I guess. The flowers are so cute though.

Hey Mike, glad you are able to post your pictures! Super nice plants and very nice shots, nice Boston too! What plant is the last one you posted that's red and white? I NEED to go plant shopping soon!

Jojo, congrats on your new Hoyas and DR. Your hoya is called Hoya Carnosa Krimson Queen. Beautiful pink flowers. You will need to up-pot(raise the trunk to show off the caudex) on your DR. Enjoy!

Jojo, if you do steal it from Mike...send me half! But don't tell him you gave me some lol...Only problem is every time I smell it, I will be in the mood to eat chocolate and that could be very, very bad.

    Jojo,

How nice of you to offer some seeds from Oliver but, planting and growing "indoor seeds" has not been very successful for me I'm afraid :O( and I don't have much south facing table room left even for something so small, literally, only some hanging room at the moment, But thank you soooo much for offering, I appreciate it!

    Hi Pug,
Thank you! Now I know the name..;) Do you have this one? I need to get them repotted, gritty mix, and straightend out. The green and white is so pretty and different. They were marked Prom and Only $3 and change! for a 6" pot!

The DR is a little yellow on the trunk, so I need to repot and raise it up, :) and feed and give hair cut! LOL! They are a little wild!

I will certianly share when I steal it.. he he... Maybe the smell would put an end to chocolate cravings..LOL!

    Chocolate anyone?
Hi everyone! Wow, a lot of activity since I last looked at this thread...Busy little beavers..lol

What is up with that Jojo?lol.
Was it because I said that I saw a lot of these at HD? You got yourself some nice beauties Jojo! They will do awesome in your care.. Happy little campers they will be..They should look awsome next to your elk horns!!
Not to say that you get to hang them outdoors most of the year!! Oh, what I would do to be able to hang plants like that outside all year under shaded areas..

Wait till you see the pinks come out on the color when they get a lot of natural light, if they are the ones I am thinking of..Sweet.

Qunnfyr, thanks so much for looking at the pics and helping me get them on!

    Hi Nancy!

    Hi Billy!

    Happy growing everyone else...

Enjoy that chocolate while you can! Me and Pug will be enjoying it too.. he he..

Yes, we have been busy! LOL!! When the Cats away the mice will play. :)

Good to see you back Mike..:)

    You corrupted me, that's what's up...ROFL!!!
Actually i've been looking for hoya's for some time. I've had 4 little ones for about 6 months now.. If you scroll up to the pic of the port. afra the small plant behind it is one of my hoya's. :)

I was actually looking at the house plants, and these were tucked in with them. In the past, they've been outside with the other plants.

I do think they will get some pink. :)

    Toni,
Yes, my cacti do have some serious thorns.. LOL!
If I ever need to move them, you roll them in carpet and hoist them with ropes. :) No touching them. LOL!

    Josh,
Good to see you stop by!

    Hi Nancy~
Wow what a beauty!!! I love the colors! Thanks for sharing that!
I am going to try one outside and keep one in. Hubby says the flowers look like a wiffle ball..LOL!

I couldnt belive the price!! That's why I grabbed 2 ! LOL! I've been seeing $5-$15 on the net for cuttings!

    Hi Christopher~
No he hasn't told us the name.. :)

As far as the Desert Rose at lowes, I never saw them on display, just the two on clearance, and i'm in there every week, so i was puzzled.

Does your lowes have a clearance rack? Ours is in the very back of the greenhouse, kinda hidden behind huge palms and such!! I found it by accident one day.

Hey Chris...That plant never came with a tag..Shoot!
I wish I knew what it was...It is a beauty in my window I tell you...How is the Mango coming along?

Nancy! How are you? Is the warm weather finally there yet. Ouch for Florida lately...You must be getting a bunch of blossoms though on all your citrus trees..Have you found any special buys lately?

    Jojo,
I am still amazed at all the buys you are getting lately!
Now, you just may have to keep that greenhouse up all winter with a couple space heaters inside for the two or three cold days you might get a year..Wow

  • puglvr1

Thanks Jojo! I really think you will like that hoya, and you're DH is right about it looking like a wiffle ball,lol...

Hey Mike, NO warm weather...we are AGAIN in a "freeze" warning tonight **sigh**...did I fall asleep and woke up in MI or IL? Please, if I did wake me up!!

Mike,I'm not buying anything right now...anything I buy I will have to protect,lol...NO more room inside the house or garage to bring anything else in. Keep fingers crossed I don't lose more plants! No blooms yet...its been too cold, maybe April?

Mike, what a bargain!!! That orchid, even w/o flowers, would be worth 10 on sale..lucky.

Pug, check out Gosucculent.com..They sell all types of sux w/red leaves including the one Mike and I have..I believe this sux is naturally green, but turns red w/sun.

Jojo..very very nice Adeniums..they prefer shallow pots, and like Pug says, show off their trunks..

Pug, those gorgeous Hoyas..WOWEE!! Your plants are so beautiful. I said it before and I'll say it again..I never tire looking at them..

Mike, does the nursery with 5.00 orchids do mail order? I'd like to order one..Toni

Toni, I will take a ride up there and see what they have..If I see anything like these, I will let you know..

They always seem to have a blow out sale this time of year when orchids are past bloom..I am going there next week actually..You bet I will check for you!
Maybe I will take a few pics and names, and then post or send them to you e-mail and you can pick..

    Big hugs to you!

    Mike...:-)

Thanks Toni, that's so nice of you to say :o)
Toni, I've been to gosucculent and I'm trying to avoid them,lol..don't have any more room for Succulents. I know I said I liked the red leaf varieties...but I really don't need any thing else. I keep telling myself this over and over...do you think it will work?

Jojo, I meant to tell you if you decide to grow one outside, make sure you put it in the shade for most of the day...one or two hours of early morning sun is okay anything more than that and your plant will look washed out faded or worse sunburned, but the benefits of lots of sun is more blooms. You're sun in summer is way more intense than ours...so just give it some afternoon shelter...just some friendly advise.

Mike, I wish you a hot and long summer.

    Hello Everyone!
    Boy Have I been busy!

    Toni,
I pulled the Adeniums out of the container to see what was up.. They are actually in like a 3" pot, and are about 2" above the bottom of the container.. so I don't have to worry about root rot! The containers don't have drain holes.

I am going to look around to see what I can come up with for shallow. :)
Thanks! I need to do some reading up on them and see about a hair cut. LOL!

    Nancy~
Thank you! Your advice is always welcome!
I have a huge shrub I was considering and figured I'd keep a close eye on them when we get hot!

    Here it is..
Please excuse the mess and the neighbors trailor.. LOL!
Spring cleaning and getting gradens ready.. stuff everywhere..LOL!!

    {{gwi:73285}}

I was thinking of hanging it on the east side.

My patio faces west and gets the intense late day sun. so don't have alot of options for outside.

    Thanks everyone!!

    Hi Josh!
No drainage in the outer... but the inner pot is a 3" plastic with holes and they are about 2" from bottom..

    Sorry I scared you.:)

Another wards, they sit in a tray so to say, after I water, dump it out a few minutes later...:)
