Pests eating on cucumber & pole bean leaves

Hi,

Anyone have any ideas on what is eating my friends cucumber & pole bean leaves?

Can't tell anything from the photo about the little black bugs, sorry. It is just too far away. They could be many things.

I can tell however that those are just common weeds in the pics - likely nettle - not tomatoes or cuke leaves. And even the weeds appear to be healthy though I sure would pull them.

The ones on either side of your photo look similar to what happens to my beans when attacked by spider mites. I'm not necessarily thinking this is the problem as my beans have not gotten to the point of looking like the ones in the middle of your photo. But nonetheless, you may want to look under the leaves to see if you have these insects.

No, Bt is for caterpillars, not beetles. That's why I mentioned it for loopers above. It isn't a beetle control pesticide. Sorry for the confusion. Want organic or chemical control? Chemical control is Sevin (carbaryl). I use only the liquid, never the dust, of it and only as a very last resort as it also kills all the beneficials. Well something has been trying to bore little holes into my beans in the last month, since I left off spraying. Last night I found a live grub in an IWK bean. It was white, about half an inch long, and had what looked like little whiskers projecting from the head. Was that a cuc beetle or a Mexican bean beetle? Didn't think the MBB got this far north.

There's no way to know for sure what kind of pests are eating your bean plants without seeing the insects or at least closely examining the damage. Below is a link to some UT Ag Ext Service publications that may be of help. There are papers about garden pests about 1/3 of the way down the page. Have you tried simple insecticidal soap? The black things are caterpillar poop. I am investigating the best way to get rid of them right now as I have the same problem. Turn the leaves over and you will see little green caterpillars that are the same color as the leaf. I did not see them until the 3rd time I was looking and they are all over...I have to do something fast, and I'm not sure I can be organic on this which really will bum me out. If I find something more out about this, I'll post up.
