Ground cherry question

Can I pick unripe ground cherries and ripen them indoors, like in a paper bag as you can do with tomatoes?
The chipmunks have discovered that ground cherries are their favorite food. Ever. I have installed a swimming pool of death and I have caught a few, but I don't think I'm making much of a dent in the population.
This my first time growing ground cherries and I would really like to taste one! Only empty brown husks piled under the plants every day.

Just when I thought the worst was over. I won the battle of SVB, cucumber beetles, all the varieties of potato beetles, a cold, wet June followed by a hot, dry July. Now it's chipmunks and tomato horn worms. Ugh.

Who knew that gardening was really war?
