Peacy lilly dying

I rec'd a peace lilly with a betta fish in the bottom as a gift for my classroom. About a week ago I noticed it becoming rootbound in the bottom of the vase and decided to plant it in a pot. I've since done this and it now looks like it's dying...it's very droopy. I checked the soil and it was very dry, so I've saturated the soil thinking this will help, but no. I'm at my wits end. Is there a special trick when potting a water bound plant to soil, specifically with a peace lilly?? Please help!

Hi there.

Well, there are few different things to consider.

1. Your PL had water roots. It make take a while to adjust to soil. Some plants make the transition easier, but not PLs.

2. Anytime you disturb a PL's roots, it's likely to pout for a while. It may stay in a bad mood for a couple of months.

3. Don't allow your PL to dry out, but resist the urge to overwater. The leaves will droop quite a bit for a while until it adjusts, so that might make you think it wants more and more water. It doesn't.

4. Hopefully you put the PL in a pot that is just big enough for the roots to fit in. You don't want a whole lot of room on the sides of the roots. PLs like to be rootbound, and being overpotted may lead to overwatering. If it's overpotted, it will probably take too long to dry, leading to root rot.

5. Lastly, be patient. Give it a few months to recover. It will probably bounce back during the spring. Just be sure not to allow it any hot light during the summer. So as we go from spring to summer, you'll want to move it away from the window. It will want bright light, but not hot light.

Good advice!

You can always cut the roots back and put your peace lily back into the same water bowl too and just keep them trimmed now and then.

You're probably doing fine. The flowers, also called spathes come and go. Eventually, if you keep your plant happy, it will grow new ones. Just enjoy those beautiful, new, luscious green leaves. -Rachel

hey welcome to GW .... first.. see link next.. is your product labeled for monthly use?? and that aside.. the mature ones are impervious to any treatment with their waxy coating.. and you must ID when the babes crawl out and are susceptible to the oil ... and that is once a year .. not monthly ... you are wasting product/money.. if nothing else ... third.. ants are usually around.. to 'milk' honeydew from whatever it is ... they are irrelevant to it all ... and the black is usually a mold as a result of the honeydew ... in other words.. get rid of the scale.. the ants will move on.. and sooner or later the mildew will go away ... the real problem.. is that the mature ones.. look no different if they are dead or alive.. just because you kill them.. doesnt mean they are going to disappear ... and frankly.. when it comes to this point.. i usually have a hard time 'looking' at them for years to come ... and it is then i think about cutting them down ... now i know nothing about this plant.. as i didnt even know it existed before your post ... but if it is like many hedges or flowering shrubs.. there is probably no reason you couldnt cut them to near ground level.. remove EVERYTHING.. treat the stumps for remnants of scale ... and within a few months.. just about have your hedge back .. since there is no insult to the root mass ... and in the meanwhile.. have removed 99.99% of the problem ... [i would burn it.. and find some satisfaction in sending them to the Elysian fields ...funeral pyre and all that ..]... hopefully you can find out if rejuvenation pruning' is an option with this plant .. good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: link
