growing muscadines

Last fall I got 1 muscadine plant with fruit on it(the veriety I believe is carlos)or something like that green/bronze color that some misterious animal enjoy overnight so anyways,early spring I had to dig it up and put it on a pot 'cause I need it the space for asparagus the thing is I have it on a 5 gallon pot is full of leaves already and it has support so I'm wondering if the container is to small?,the only spot available it gets full sun until 12 or 1 pm then is shadeded were will be happier pot or ground?thanks.

I get muscadine fruit from vines in 10 gallon pots, so I know that works (they will eventually be planted in the ground though). As with most fruit plants, they would prefer full all-day sun but they seem to tolerate slight shade or part day of shade. The morning sun you get is the best time. I'd be reasonably optimistic though I'd look for a bigger pot. Bury the sides of the pot in leaves in early winter to minimize soil freezing.

I wish that more backyard growers grew muscadines, because they really have some good features. Since you have interest to grow them, why not grow varieties that produce bigger, better grapes than Carlos, and they can be self-fruitful. You can find online sellers easily enough. I am in the process of grafting away poor varieties of old muscadine vines with much better quality scions. I wish that I would have planted better years ago. Some varieties are SO MUCH BETTER than others. Just today I did more cleft grafts on older vines like Summit and Magnolia using Triumph scions. I assume that the vines ordered years ago were labeled accurately, but I do wonder.

I gathered a bunch of seeds from store bought muskadines, let them completely dry for a few months then popped them in some nice putting soil I've been cultivating a few years now. I didn't do anything special, just buried them about a quarter inch, watered and 3 months later I have some nice seedlings. The tallest now is about 2 inches, but I expect they'll take off soon. I recently transplanted to deeper pots and so far so good. The first transplant, about a month ago has spread out and now has 2 new shoots coming up. I'm looking forward to building a nice trellis for them soon as they're big enough. I have plenty of sunny areas in the yard as opposed to my neighbor who planted his up under the pines in his back yard. His are growing, but I have my doubts they'll produce much in the shade.. I would tell him, but he already knows everything there is to know about everything that is to know. LOL

Generally and as I recall, there is a trade-off between planting to minimize erosion - across the slope - and to maximize sunlight, which in your case would seem to be almost down the slope (if my memory and spatial imagination are both working correctly), since you want the rows to run north/south so the sun hits both sides of the row in the AM AND in the PM. If there is a viticulture or grape-growing forum, you might ask there. There may be books available also - try your local library or inter-library loan. I think your best bet would be to contact your local county extension agent and have him/her come out and take a look and advise you on the best siting. Seeing the site can give much better information than trying to visualize it. Look in the phone book under gov't offices, or google for your county's offices. If there isn't one for your county, then there may well be one for a neighboring county - they will usually cover both counties.

There is one like that just north of Lafayette clearly visible from I-49. Each side of the arbor starts with a single brick column about 4 to 5 feet high. The top, which goes across the driveway is an arch shape. Pretty awesome looking, but I suspect cost a pretty penny to get it done. Here is a link that might be useful: New Dawn Weblog

It's my first time growing grapes. I planted these last March/April. They are Niagara variety grapes. I'm not sure how they differ from the variety you mention. I'm in Winchester, KY. The growth is just now starting to 'vine-out'. I attached some string from the stockade fence yesterday for these vines to train up. I'm not sure I will keep the string there permanently. Works for now til I decide to put some trellis against the existing fence or just let them decide for themselves on where to grow.
