Green Gooey Caterpillars!
Comments (4)These are tomato hornworms, pretty common and it's good to just hand pick them. I've read that they glow in the dark if you shine a blacklight on them at night. That would make it much easier to find them if true. Inspect the whole plant, also looking on the undersides of the leaves and check for smaller ones and the eggs which are small green globes. The black deposits are 'frass' (bug poo) from the caterpillars. As they get bigger sometimes the frass looks like pellets and can be greenish. If you happen to see one that has some white cocoons on it, let that one remain because it is an incubator for parasitic wasps that help keep these under control. Google natural control for tomato hornworm for other suggestions....See MoreFound a large green egg on my tomato leaf
Comments (7)Could be either the tobacco or the tomato hornworm sphinx, Edna. Both are beautiful night-flying moths. The caterpillars are gorgeous, too! If, when it hatches, it has a red horn, it's the tobacco hornworm (manduca sexta). If it's black, its the tomato hornworm (manduca quinquemaculata). I haven't had one single tobacco or tomato hornworm in my garden this year, darn it! Susan...See Morecaterpillars in my tomatoes
Comments (22)Yes, the BT spray or Dipel dust which is the same thing is a biological insecticide and only destroys the worms when they ingest it. I like to use this (when I can find it) instead of the more poisonous products. It is much safer to use around children and pets. For some reason, the major hardware stores aren't carrying it now, not in my city anyway (probably because it works and isn't lethal to humans, lol) Even some nurseries aren't carrying it which seems odd. No doubt, you can purchase it from an organic plant product site online. It is usually reasonably priced....See Morevery large green creature on my tomato plant
Comments (2)Sounds like a hornworm, one that's been parasitized by a small, non-stinging wasp. The white things attached to the caterpillar are the stage of the small wasps just before they become adults. ....See Morebb
