I just wanted to give you guys an update as to how my apples were doing. There was some discussion as to whether or not I was getting enough chill hours. It was speculated that I may not get fruit in my tropical region.

Well, I am proud to announce that I have apples on all 3 of my trees. The white winter pearmain and cox orange pippen are moving along like gangbangers! The red astrachan is the only one moving slowly but there are a few little ones swelling. Pearmain bloomed first, pippen second, red third. The crops are best on pippen first, pearmain second and red third.

Red doesn't have pictures yet because they are too small. ;-)

I'm still having a bit of an issue with aphids and ants but nothing that's out of control. I'm pretty please with my first crop. :-)

Nice pics.

I'm growing Anna and Golden Dorsett in my Ca zone 10, and the Dorsett has about 8 or 10 nice fruit - 2 already eating size. The Anna did well last year, but is just now leafing out and blossoming - very slooowly. I'm watching it as it did have a fairly good crop last year for such a young tree.

About aphis, I use the duct tape-Tanglefoot combo on most of my fruit trees - especially citrus, and have had good luck with it. Also like to blast young growth from time to time with water from the hose - not too hard tho - as it will blast blossoms/setting fruit if not done properly, and should only be done early so as to dry leaves before night fall.

Thanks for sharing - my trees are doing very well this year - apricot (2), almond (2), Bonanza peach (low chill), macadamia, fig. This is the best fruit set yet for my Fuyu persimmon, hope they stay on. Also have a new banana (in a pot) doing quite well, a jujube and a pineapple guava, along with mandarin, lime, orange, and Eureka lemon (which is looking much better this year - has hard rind, but juice is great).

I am well on my way! I would say that both the pearmain and the Pippen have 2 dozen fruit each maybe a tad more. I have an almond and a pom wonderful that haven't done much yet. It's ok though, they're still young. This weekend is going to be all prep for the blackberries and citrus I'm getting next weekend. I can't wait. My toms, peppers and herbs are off to a lovely start as well. :-)

I can get used to this! :-) Happy gardening

You got a nice plant there! I'm a big fan of Myrmecodia & Hydnophytum too! I've never propagated mine by cuttings (some kinds of plants that normally form thickened stems or caudices when grown from seed, don't form them when grown from cuttings; I didn't know if it'd be worth a try). I have grown Hydnophytum from seed, though. If down the line you have seeds to plant, I'll second what the copied article above says-- make sure to get them planted while they're fresh. They'll sprout almost immediately that way, but the germination rate goes down very quickly if they're stored. Now--- I'm going to question the ID...but I promise not to call it a Ficus or an Adenium! Hydnophytum moseleyanum is very, very often misnamed in the horticultural trade as H. formicarium. They're similar, but the real formicarium has a much more flattened-circular, symmetrical caudex, often (though not always) with a rough, channeled surface. It also has very prominent, raised leaf veins and leaves with very blunt, rounded tips. The real H. moseleyananum has thicker, smoother leaves with a bit of a point at the very tips. The base might have a little roughness, but it won't be have the ridges that H. formicarium often does, and it's most apt to be taller for its width, oval, and often lumpy/asymmetrical. You could try this organic recipe (I'm having to adlib since I can't seem to find the exact note for this): Starting boiling about two cups of water, add half a cup of white sugar, a tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of borax. Put dabs of the mixture into old milk jug lids and put them near the mounds. The ants should injest the mixture and take it back to the mound where it will get passed to workers and the queen, eventually killing the hive. It won't work in one application, so expect to rebait every other day. Now, here is the kicker: This completely 100% Organic ant bait is more dangerous to dogs, cats and any other critters that are attracted to the sweet mixture than your standard Amdro ant bait. So you will want to cage it so that only the ants can get to it. I understand the desire to do things the safe way, I am close to 98% chemical free in my practices, but in some cases, fire ants being one, chemical is safer and more effective than organic. Like the suggestion with the borax mixture, when I use amdro to bait mounds, I cover the bait with a pot, a piece of wood or some other item, simply to make sure the abundant birds that visit my yard don't mistake it for feed. I'm not too worried about other critters as my Springer Spaniel who is an awesome tracker/sniffer and gets easily distracted by any new/strange scent has never shown a bit of interest in the baited areas.

I have ants in my mailbox. (I know,,,,, it sounds like a personal problem. lol lol). except I have a metal post!. so I assume they're coming from the ground. There's three piles of eggs too. I SWEAR BY Terro Ant Baits, been using them for years and ants have been gone in less than 24 hours. I put a trap in the mailbox last night at 9 pm and 12 hours later they're still going but many ate it because their belly's are nice and full (they all got big butts lol) I'm hoping they take the bait and die off before the mail lady comes. I think she didn't leave me mail yesterday because of them. Funny I don't like killing them, but am poisoning them w/ Terro. Is that sadistic or what?> lMAO. I'll keep this updated.

Hiya, This is the second year for me to start seeds downstairs. Last year I had one shelf and filled it up completely. I had pretty good success....sunflowers, zinnias, over wintered coleus, etc. that is until I brought everything upstairs and outside to harden off and the bunny ate them all! I forgave him though, he was a baby, and he was so friendly he stayed around for about 3 months and would eat carrots out of my hand and come up to the patio door in the morning when he heard us making coffee....he would even run down to me off the hill when I called his name.....Bun Bun....It was a real treat that he lived here last year and gave me lots of happiness, then one day I never saw him again. I will have to post a picture of him. (Even the neighbors would feed him and call him by name....it was so cute) YaYa

I'm in 10A in east central FL, growing 3 non-low chill vars, red delicious, stayman winesap, and fuji. So far since planting a few months ago they are growing vigorously, but the true test will be in a couple years when I allow them to hold fruit. What grape vars were successful for you at your place?

This is actually only my second year with the apples. I planted them the first week of January 2006. I'm not sure about grapes that will grow in our area. I'm not a grape grower yet. I'm hoping to be next year after I can get the pergola up in my backyard.

So far I have been succesful with a Garden Prince Almond, Pom Wonderful (neither have fruited yet), various veggies, herbs and I have 10 blackberries and 8 citrus on the way. I think we're the pretty lucky ones that can grow just about anything. :-) Good luck to you and your fruits.

You at least have proved they will break dormancy and flower/fruit. Next, to find out if fruit will make it to maturity without issues. I thought I read something in your other post about grapes. I have 7 muscadine vars, which of course, do well here. I have a pom with fruit now, and a few other vars of pom as well. Actually have well over 100 fruit vars. Fruit getting mature is the toughest test, keep us apprised.
