Most onions keep for months if properly cured/dried and stored in a dark, cool and dry place. I've read that sweet onions don't store as well and of course green onions don't store for more than a few days.

Onions... well, most onions, are day-length sensitive, so even if you plant some on one date and others two weeks later, they'll all get "done" at the same time. Just the ones with less time will be smaller.

I'm sure there's some day-neutral onions.

The bunches are in a dormant state when you buy them, but I have my doubts that they would last that long.

I have always enjoyed planting my onion plants two inches apart and then pulling every other one as we needed green onions to eat. That thins them while enjoying them and allows the remaining ones room to grow. There are many ways to enjoy them cooked with other foods, like chopped, sauteed and scrambled in with eggs so that I do not feel that we have any waste.

Geen I use more onions than anything in my kitchen...close runner up is garlic..I buy onions every time I go to the store...I feel wealthy when I can go to Sam's club and buy one of those huge bags...I say plant them and store the onions..

Well, one thing I might do after pulling some small ones in the spring is chop some of the mature onions and freeze them for stew or scrambled eggs. I did read in the link at the bottom that onions, if stored properly in a cool dry place, will last about five months.

Here in Georgia, people wait impatiently for the first wave of Vidalia onions to hit the grocery stores in the spring. There's a rush on for them. They really ARE good, so sweet and flavorful.
