Pear tree green at tips but won't break buds

I bought a 5' tall bare root pear tree and planted it two months ago. Tips all had green leaves and flowers. (I removed all the flowers.) All the rest of the buds were brown and dry. Some have swelled a little (possibly), but none have leafed out at this late date. The green tips have not grown much but are still healthy looking. What's with this tree?

You planted a bare root tree that was not fully dormant, and you may have done it a little late for your climate. There is still a chance the tree will survive, but I would cut it back by at least half of those 5 feet. Next time, start with a dormant tree and try to plant earlier.

The roots have not yet had a chance to really grow after only two months, and they may not be in a position to support any leaf growth. Cutting back the top may reduce the demand on those developing roots.

I don't work with the Sunset system since I don't live in California, but are you in the far northern part of the state where the weather is still cool? If so, that will help.

I am in Santa Rosa, zone 9. We've just had several days of high seventies. I planted the tree in February. Days were quite cool then; nights often were near or below freezing. Tree was leafed out then with tufts at the end of about eight stems. It's still about the same; maybe a little more tip growth. Buds were brown and dead when I got the tree; I didn't notice that until after I had gotten home and planted it.

Are you sure I should cut the tree back by half? That would remove all its leaves. Aren't the leaves responsible for manufacturing food to allow the tree to grow?

If the branches are healthy, then it should make it. Couple of cherries I recently got are just starting to open up. So far, that have had just under 2 weeks of sun since I bought them from the store where they were gettng just the fluoro. But an almond that I planted is still dormant. I think my almond tree is dead now because the branch tips are dying back (shriveling tips and turning dark brown/black - almost like a canker) about an inch per a week. It's sad to see it die coz. it was an awesome specimen - Had the perfect spread and arrangement of the branches and would have matured into a well shaped tree with some care. It's pain hopping stores/nurseries to find a good specimen (There's only as much that you can do with pruning/training) Good luck! -:)

Peach tree is yet to break bud

I'd scratch the bark a little on a branch and see if it's green underneath. One of my four new little peach whips did nothing for so long I was sure it had died over the Winter. The others had bloomed and were leafing out and it just sat there with black buds. Several weeks later it began to show signs of life and now has bloomed and is pushing out leaves. There is a range of bloom times and newly planted trees can be even more variable.

+oM, From the FWIW category. I on a personal level have been raising trees from seed, bare root trees, and containerized trees and growing them into the fabric pots for the last 2-3 years. I have been pretty successful. The containerized plants have all had the usual issues of circling roots, and planted to deep in the containers. These plants I have literally hacked up the root systems to remove the problems (while completely leaved out), followed by replanting in the fabric root pruning pots for the remainder of the growing season. Results have been good so far, with little to no apparent root circling problems. One issue that I have encountered, is that the fabric tends to drain somewhat poorly at times, so that you can end up with a very wet bottom layer that is ripe for certain disease problems to begin. Some trees this won't matter, for others it can be fatal. In an attempt to try to resolve this, I have taken to cutting multiple ~1-1.5" T shaped slits around the bottom to act as drainage holes for excess water. I do not yet know how well this will work, but I would expect it to an improvement. Arktrees

While looking into midge chemical cures, I found disturbing information on merit and bees... sigh. I found this info in the American rose Annual from 1918 on the treatment of midge at the time by Mr. Koch in Humboldt Park gardens in Chicago. I don't know where I'd get a load of tobacco stems, (ha), but I thought this organic treatment was interesting. "He found many of the plants affected with mildew and stem- blight, and, in 1911, rose midge had been introduced with new plants in the three principal parks. Hybrid Perpetuals and Gruss an Teplitz were found particularly susceptible to attacks of the midge. After considerable experimental work, Mr. Koch adopted mulching four inches deep with tobacco stems. It is applied after the first summer hoeing, about mid-June, and spaded under after frost in autumn. Where the mulch becomes thinned or shifted in the course of the summer, additional appUcations are made. This, he found, prevents hibernation of the pest. Last summer but few larvae and few injuries were found. For the greater security of other varieties, it was found necessary to remove Gruss an Teplitz from Douglas Park entirely in 1915." OK, I am confused. If it has green leaves growing, why are you worried about the rest of the buds?

Maybe the roots were trimmed so much (as often happens with bare roots), the leaves that have opened are all that the roots can support at this point. Clearly it is still alive, and it has only been two months, things are probably right where they should be. If you wanted something with more growth than your little bare root tree has, maybe you should take it back and buy a bigger, potted tree?
