white fuzz on my leaves

Hi all, I was given this plant several years ago, I don't know what it is. It has always had this white fuzz looking stuff in the leaves and stems. I wipe it off but it comes back. What is it and how do get rid off it? Next post shows a pic ofhe entire plant. Thanks!

It either mealy bugs or fungus. Ground cinnamon will kill fungus.(I think it's mealy bug)

Yeah - mealybugs. Try what Minibot suggested - you can actually spray it with rubbing alcohol diluted with water 1:3 - be sure that you get in all the "armpits". Do it 3 times week apart and wipe the windowsill, saucers etc. with this solution - they lay eggs. There are more potent pesticides that kill them but try it first. Neem oil - I do not know - they are so well protected with their fuzz- which is eradicated with alcohol - the oil can just leave untidy spots on their furcoats, but not really reach them. Irina

1st picture -- possible mealybugs or a woolly aphid. Rub them off; squish; or wash them off. 2nd photo -- an overwhelming case of spider mites. Wash them off; repeat as needed.

Thank you! I did some Google research on wooly aphids and I think you might be right. I am glad I caught the problem early before they did too much damage. I think I'll try spraying the plants with a mixture of castle soap and water. I really appreciate the help!

I just did some quick reading on mealybugs and if it is, then wouldn't all the other houseplants be affected too? True, this plant does sit 15 feet or more away from the other house plants, but how does that work with mealybugs? I've never seen any of this "white fuzz" on my other plants.

Hmmm I think you are just Lucky if it is mealy bugs that you haven't gotten it on any other plants you might want to just toss the plant but if you don't you might get it on all your houseplants. Sorry it happens to everyone just be glad it's not spider mites.

You can wipe those off with cotton ball/q-tip damp with rubbing alcohol. Spraying with a squirt bottle can help also if you can't reach the cracks/crevices where the petioles join the stem.

Michael, the same works for spider mites.

Rubbing alcohol is usually recommended for smooth-leaf (not hairy leaf) plants. I don't know why though.
