A friend of mine planted about 100 Green Giants about three years ago. They were about 18-24" tall when he planted them. Green Giants are pretty deer resistant, but where my friend and I live there are just too many deer in a small area (island) for that to mean much. The first year he planted these 100 Green Giants, the deer destroyed about 25 of them. After he replaced them, I recommended that he start using Milorganite fertilizer around the trees to keep the deer away. (It's an unadvertized fact that Milorganite acts as a deer repellent.) He started dumping Milorganite around the base of the trees on the perimeter of his property and the following year those were nearly 2ft. taller than the other trees (same growing conditions). Needless to say he started using it around all the Green Giants and this year some of the ones that he started using it on first are taller than me (6ft.). I started using Milorganite on my lawn a few years ago to keep the deer away that were eating my plants and it did wonders for my lawn. I started dumping it around all my perennials, mixing it in with the potting soil for my annuals, and tilling it into my vegetable garden. Everything improved! The stuff is like the Frank's Red Hot commercial... I put that s*#& on everything! I'm not sure it's the "best" fertilizer for your Green Giants, but it's definitely good. In the past I was always afraid to fertilize because I'd overdone it too many times and killed/burned too many plants and lawn. Milorganite is organic, so you can't really use too muich... it will just sit there on/in the soil until the soil microorganisms can consume it. Good luck!

Your hosta pictures are great. Enjoyed your dividing pictures, and the results from the next year. One of my New Year Resolutions will be to take my camera with me often when I plan to work outside. I need more documentation for myself of my hostas. Connie

At risk of appearing arguementive, I have stood in the shade of a very mature Sagae ready for shipping at a growers field. It was root-balled like a tree, and granted the root ball was 3' diameter, the top of the plant was WELL over my head and I am 6'3"+. I was so impressed I bought a young-un which is now in it's 3rd year and measured 15"h x 42"w during a drought. Sagae Blue Angel (mine is still a kid at 21"tall x 51" ) Earth Angel (mine is a baby from Hallson last fall) Regal Splendor (mine is only in 3rd year but starting to stand tall-and gorgeous) Empress Wu (just bought a baby two weeks ago) Krossa Regal (mine is still a kid too! In human age terms not yet legal to buy beer in Illinois) Parhelion: She, KR, and RS will be standing in line for their 1st beer together - but Parhelion is already 24" x 51" Sum & Substance (Mine is mature at 28" x 55") Liberty (Will it get tall enough? Mine is in 2nd spring) If I think of another I will go out and get it (LOL). That is how my list of "Must Have" is defined. I know what variegation I want but haven't pinned down a specific hosta. Just a comment on my hostas heights. Last year I entered a drought in July and no matter how much I could afford to water, they ALL lost 4"-6" in height from earlier measurements due to sagging petiole. This year I am already in my second month of drought. In May and June combined I have had less than 2 1/2" of rain TOTAL. Can I anticipate my hostas would measure taller if they had adequate water?
