Jan, azalias are tricky. First, I wouldn't have repotted. That shouldn't be done until all signs of flowers are gone, in spring.
They can survive in a bright-bright north window..(mine are in south and east windows)
One important thing is they need cool to cold temps. The cooler the better. Especially if you want to keep the flowers.
The soil should be acidic, yet well-draining.
IS the brown crispy or soft? And I'm sure you took, if any, foil off, right? Toni

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your Azalea. It really is shocking to bring home a beautiful plant like that and watch it wither away. I have given up Azaleas for now because my home is too warm. But my mother who can heat each room individually has a gorgeous Azalea that grows like a weed and is constantly in bloom. I'll share her success habits and hope some of it will help.

Azaleas can be extremely temperamental when their needs are not met. For flower bud loss one of the most common culprits is dry, hot air. Azaleas like cool temperatures and they like moist air. They do not, no matter how much we hope, do well in well-heated/warm rooms.

They also like their compost moist at all times and their leaves will shrivel up and drop if left without the right amount of water for too long. Underwatering for these plants is a reason to complain. Letting them dry-out is a big no-no.

They love bright light without direct or too much sun. They also like to be watered with soft water.

So the main requests of this temperamental little beauty to stay content are to keep it well-watered, cool and in bright light. I personally can provide two out of three needs - I can't provide the coolness at all - and therefore gave the Azalea up until I can (hopefully) one day accommodate all requirements. I tried once - hoped the Azalea would be forgiving - and I failed miserably. The plant was not happy with me LOL :)

Jan, very good information has come your way. Just a point or two. The reason your buds dropped, probably can be put right at the feet of 'too high a nighttime temperature and too low intensity of sunlight'.
At this time of season, I would suggest you find a more well-lit area....in a southern or western exposure.

A northern exposure is fine when the sun values return after March. Until then though, southern or western is what's called for.

I don't know whether you can lower your room temp to a range that might you feel is too cold....near 60F is appreciated. But...that's the price of having azalea.
And of course, they like it in an acid soil so the use of peat moss in your mix is called for. Stores have soil expressly for azalea and rhodo.

You might too, put a tea bag onto the soil surface and whne dry, break it open and spread the tea leaves on the surface.
Each time you water, you will be giving your plant a bit of acidity.

Your water should be from a container that has been left out overnight to gain room temperature....and not from a softened system.

I agree with what each poster said, except I don't keep soil wet at all times. One thing I do is use a retangular bottom (that come w/peat pots for seedlings) and keep that filled w/water.
A summer outdoors in the semi-shade will send out growth, and if you leave out until it gets cold, (first frost) about 2 wks after you bring inside you'll notice buds. I keep mine out until late Oct, early Nov depending on temps. When it dips in the mid-30's, I'll bring indoors..but I do not let azalias sit in this temp more than one night. Toni

Thank you for your responses. I got a good idea of what's gone wrong--too close to the heating vent, I let it dry out (but only once!) and I repotted it w/o peat or acidic soil. The plant looks terrible at the moment, but there are some signs of recovery with a bit new growth! What lovely azaleas you have hopefulauthor.

Janna, do you have another location you can set azalias? Soemwhere away from vents..
I'm assuming the flowers are gone, right? Constant repotting isn't good for any plant, but if you've got peat lying around perhaps you can re=repot again. Mix all purpose and peat w/just a bit of sand.
After flowering, the plant should be potted in a container one size larger. The tea bags might work, I have to try it.or 1 capful of vinager per gallon of water will help acidify the soi, too. Don't fertilize just yet. Wait about 5-7 wks.
If you can summer outdoors in a semi-shady spot this will really help. Is tis possible? Toni

Hi, I remember you. You have beautiful jasmines in your bedroom. Anyway, you have nice Azalea breeds; and nice color combination, too. I bet those are not cheap. Please take good care of them.

Oh, yes, those are cyclamens. They have been flowring for 3 months now. The large type has leaves larger than my palms. They are jumping out of their pots.

Shic, your cyclamens are beautiful. How long have you had them? I think they're so pretty but difficult to care for. I have one recently purchased..now to keep it living. Yours are gorgeous. Again, your cyclamen looks like a fancy breed. I had mine for 3 years. They are lovely, but not difficult. These plants are far less demanding than indoor gardenia and some slipper orchid. It had no disease and does not require outdoor living. It just wants it damp and cool. If you keep the temperature below 60, they will adjust quickly to full sun. I put them under direct sun with temperature between 40 and 60. I water from the top, on the side, slowly, so that the water does not touch the growing spot of the tuber. It is in a 12" pot. It is a little too large to sit in another container.

Around April/May, it will turn yellow as temperature rises. If you increase water and fertilizing level after seeing the yellow leaves, the tuber will rot quickly. Simply stop watering, sit it in a cool and dark basement during the hot summer. Only keep the surface soil semi-moist. It will come back in September/October.

How is your cyclamen now?

Does anyone know if I am supposed to clip the dead buds off the azalea plant? I have some brown flowers (dead) and I don't know if I should clip them off or leave them alone.

I bought an Azalea approximately two weeks ago and the florist did not give me the right advice: he asked me to water it once a week! I did that and now my dear plant is dying out, the flowers have withered and the leaves have dried out and turned brown in color.

I am going to follow the advice on this thread: never let the soil dry out, place it in a cool area ~60 F, expose it to sufficient light. I will also try to acidify the soil using a tea bag...fingers crossed.
