What are the odds

What are the odds of putting tomato seeds in the ground for a fall crop. I remember many years ago my grandfather saved seeds every year and planted them in the ground in the spring and always had a great crop. What do all yÂall think about it.

My early girl tomato plant lived all winter last year, and started to produce, but we had to pull it up when we moved in april of this year :(

I assume you are in Texas, as we are but in 8B. I try to take cuttings of my tomatoes (Celebrity, Roma, Kellogg's Breakfast) about now, and after they root, plant them out in early September. The cherry and pear tomatoes just keep on truckin' until the first hard freeze.
I have no idea about direct seeding for a fall crop of tomatoes. However, if you don't try it, you'll never know! How about taking cuttings and direct seeding and finding out what happens? And, of course, letting us know.

Hmmmm.... How far can a bee fly? 4-5 miles? How isolated is *YOUR* cherry tree? I could say that chances are good that you will get a Cherry tree... Beyond that -- your guess is as good as mine.. If you want to know both parents -- bag some buds and hand pollinate when they open up and become fragrant... Then bag them up again so they don't get eaten by bugs... Thanks John

You brought back some nice thoughts, Julu. I was a mere child of late-late twenties when I moved back 'home' to this area because that is where my parents decided to retire. I have never regretted it, nor did I think I'd ever end up back here. I know now, it was where I was drawn like a siren's call. That meant that after traipsing all over, I was so very blessed to see my parents numerous times a week and talk to them nearly daily through their 'golden' years. When I married last, I always went past the street to their house on my way back from work, and the car just instinctively pulled off and to their house. (even if I only stayed long enough to rip off a few corny jokes with Daddy and ask his advise about something.......God I miss that, he knew how to do everything. And, have a cuppa tea with my Mama. As I pulled away from their house to continue home, I always said a prayer of thanks that I could enjoy this and I appreciated how long that lasted. For many years and never took it for granted. My father died eighteen years ago this summer. I can empathise with what you are saying. I was a middle ager and there were our whole immediate family alive and doing well. It was very, very precious. My folks, who lost siblings or parents/grandparents to tragic accidents and wars weren't so fortunate. I never took it for granted. My dear Mama lived to the age of 91 and I just lost her two years ago. You can't imagine what we were able to talk about in those widow years she had. Elderly people can open up and they have such eyes to the world.

Basil cross pollinating, what are the odds?

Collected the first of my seeds from Italian Sweet Basil which I have had growing right next to the African Blue Basil. The African Blue does not produce seed, but it flowers and flowers. I watch the bees go back and forth between the Italian and the African, hoping the African produces viable pollen and I might have some crosses between the Italian and the African. Worst case scenario is I end up with a lot of italian basil. The African is prolific, frost hardy, perennial and propagates easier from cuttings than most basils - but the flavor is only mediocre. I have some Dark Purple Opal seedlings and cuttings from Thai Basil coming along I will also try to hybridize with the African Basil. Not sure how to emasculate basil... if I emasculate the Italian, Thai or Opal, then any seed should have African parentage?

@aktillery9 I will post another pick to maybe show better what I mean! This is the view looking into the family foom. Kitchen is on the left and dining is on right, marked by two of those pillars. So a rug tucked under the sofa would just sort of start abruptly when viewed from this angle. Maybe I'm imagining that this will look odd ha ha!

If you're in zone 7, you don't have enough time before frost to get tomatoes to grow from seed. They need about 6 weeks before they're typical transplant size and then another 65-80 days to get the first ripe tomatoes. And that's with typical summer heat and sunshine. Fall growing plants are slower due to the reduced sun and cooler nights.

Or, you could start them in containers and bring them inside later in the fall if you have a very bright, sunny location for them. It would have to be in an area like a sun-room or similar to get enough light for them to continue to grow.

If you can find well grown transplants now, you might stand a chance if they're an early maturing variety and if the fall is warm with late frost this year. Cuttings or suckers might work but it's an iffy proposition, also.

If you try, please come back and let us know how it turns out. Of course, if you're in a zone warmer than 7, there's a better chance of success.
