black knot on plum

I inherited a plum tree from the prior owner of my house, and last year it got a horrible case of black knot. It was all over the branches and I had to have it cut back severely to just the basic frame of the largest braches. I had a black knot collecting party with my wife and kids and we disposed of everything on the ground that we could find. This spring I sprayed with Captan twice before bloom (at bud break and two weeks later) and I haven't seen any more knots.

Does my poor tree have any chance to recover? And, if so, when should I reapply the Captan (or do whatever else I need to do). Thanks.

Rob
