What's a good summer gardening shoe?
Comments (18)Well, I'm a huge crocs fan! They make a ton of styles. Sandals, clogs, non-slip, hiking etc etc. What I love is that they can get wet (nothing worse than a soggy tennis shoe!). But your feet DON'T SWEAT in them (REAL CROCS not the $5 Target ones. They're made of plastic and DO make your feet sweat)!!!!!!! My DH had the stinkiest feet in the world til he started wearing them! They're made out of some sort of vegetable protein (soy????) that doesn't make your feet sweat. We wear them from spring til fall (and DH year round!) HTH! NT We b...See MoreWhat was your most embarassing moment in the garden?
Comments (70)1. We have a pack of cats (8) that terrorize almost anything that moves. Voles, gophers, mice, rats, bats, small rabbits, birds (unfortunately) etc. Sometimes they do "catch and release" after bringing them into the house for presentation and admiration. So one night last summer after a long day of working in the yard we both fell into bed and disturbed an already very irritated gopher snake. Yes, levitation is more than a theory. Meanwhile Mist (our mighty hunter) is looking at the commotion with an "Is there a problem? Seemed like a perfectly good place to stash a snake" expression. . . Cat and snake went out separate doors. 2. Another hornet story. Last week while trying to reclaim a very overgrown bed I bumped a huge hornet nest and they all came straight up. Multiple stings as I sprinted for the house shedding clothes as I ran, but one got me on my eyelid. My eye is now deep purple and swollen and DH is spending a lot of time protesting "Honest, I didn't do it." :-) 3. We have raccoons at the Bellingham house. A family (Mom, two babies and two teenagers from last year) have set up housekeeping in an old garden shed and see no good reason to leave anytime soon (sigh). We were in the hot tub late one night with a large bowl of strawberries set on the deck behind us. DH, without looking, reached back to get one and encountered something furry and hissing. He did a turn worthy of an Olympic medal and discovered Mom and babies helping themselves. I, being the supportive DW that I am :-), was laughing myself silly. Given that they were in complete possession of the strawberries and the babies were whisker deep in the chocolate we moved to the other end of the tub and watched their midnight feast (with DH muttering about pushy wildlife). They finished everything, calmly washed their paws in the tub and continued on with their evening. . ....See MoreYour most embarrassing moment in the garden?
Comments (43)Years ago, I had just spread a bunch of purchased compost all over the flower beds when I saw a couple of slender leaves emerging, pretty things, & I gently dug around until I found that they were growing from teensy little bulbs. I was a sort of new gardener, & I was (& still am) very excited by the sort of serendipity or happenstance or feral nature of garden surprises, so I watched the new little bulbs to see what kind of flower they made. I watered 'em, I mulched 'em, I guarded them like they were solid gold. One day, before I got any flowers but after they had popped up all over the place, a neighbor looked at my little experiment & asked, "what are you going to do about all that nut grass?" I stammered out what had happened, including the mulch/water/compost, & he thought for a minute & said, "Well, it *is* a very healthy-looking stand of nut grass."...See MoreWhat was Your Most Embarassing Moment in the Garden?
Comments (13)One I can recall: Early Summer 1999 As I was making my way through my herb garden up on the hill, I caught the toe of one of my sandals on a log that bordered one of the herb beds. (my body continued to move forward...my foot didn't!) I tripped! I fell like a giant redwood, face down, my forehead hitting another log on the other side of the path, breaking my glasses upon impact. My nose stuck into the dirt and bark in the path like the beak of a freaking dippy bird! (I was so embarrassed!) I let out a war whoop from the pain, blood rushing down my face. I was spitting blood and spitting bark and dirt. I had a big gash on my nose with pieces of bark and dirt embedded in it. I thought it was broken as well. I couldn't see for the dirt and the blood. I busted my upper lip and loosened a tooth and it was bleeding too. I had a big bruise and lump on my forehead, and an abrasion. Both of my knees were banged up, bruised and cut. My elbows and the palms of my hands had bad scrapes and I couldn't get up. My DH was up on the roof doing some repair work at the time. When I cried out, he leaped off the roof and hit the ground running. He was at my side in a heartbeat. How he kept from breaking something in that heroic leap, I can't say. He scooped me up and carried me down the hill and into the house and doctored me. When I related the story, he began to laugh in his big booming Scottish laugh. :) I was sooooooo embarrassed! I still have a scar on my nose to remind me of the time I tripped and planted my nose in the herb garden. ~ sweetannie4u...See Morewoohooman San Diego CA zone 10a
