pocket gopher got my tree?

We have a 3 or 4 year old apricot, about 1.5-inch diameter... Over the winter it was buried in about 2 feet of snow for several months straight. NOw that the snow is gone, what do you know, the bark was all eaten off. About a two-foot strip, all the way around the tree. I'm thinking this was NOT mice, but rather, pocket gophers-- now that the snow is gone I see their above-ground tunnels everywhere in the area. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Next question: Is there ANYTHING that can be done to save this tree?

Final question: What should I wrap my young trees with to avoid this in the future? I hate working with chicken wire-- other suggestions?

(I had really thought this tree was big enough that it didn't need special treatment. Live and learn .)
