Can I prune my apple tree now?

I believe apple (most fruit) trees should probably be pruned back in the fall but I didn't get to it. Is it okay to prune now? This is a tree that was on the property when we bought it 3 years ago. It's VERY productive (I must have given a dozen 5 gallon buckets of 2.5-3" wide apples to the pigs last year), but I'd like to see about increasing the size of the fruit by limiting the number of apples (hundreds and hundreds). I'd plan on doing a very significant pruning.

Thanks

JR
