??? about grafting grapes

Hi,

I must admit I no nothing about grafting grapes and would appreciate it if some one could run me through the complete process (brief form).

Questions like are all grape verities compatible so they can be grafted at random? Best time to take cuttings, which happen to be Concord (blue). Can they be grafted to a white grape plant?

I know Concord is a common type grape but I would be doing this for a friend of mine who wants these special Concords in his yard because his mom planted them many years ago and the homestead has long been sold to other people who are happy to supply him with anything he needs as far as the grape vines go. When is the correct time to take scions(?)

not sure if that is the correct term. Would like to know about things other than bud grafting or is that the only method one uses on grapes?

I've done a limited amount of pear and apple grafting have grown grapes but never tried grafting. Any information would be helpful and appreciated

Does your friend have limited space? Grapes are easily rooted from cuttings. Its easier than grafting.

awhh I had a link for a website about this. Cant find it now. You would want to take soft wood cuttings, when the scions are already growing you take a pencil sized one and graft it to a semi hardwood branch on the rootstock. You would do a whip graft. If sap flows from the scion your in good shape. I think you cut the top of your scion so it can ooz sap, or the pressure can blow the scion off! And leave one bud to grow.

runswithscissors, below is a link to a thread that might help you understand something of fruit tree reproduction. There's some confusion in the thread but it should come clear if you read through. The short version is that modern apple cultivars are no more "hybrids" than apples from 200 years ago -- neither are meaningfully "hybrid." Tree reproduction is very different from garden crop/vegetable reproduction, so a lot of people seem to get confused assuming they're more similar than they are. Growing apples from seed generally isn't ever (and hasn't ever been) the way to reproduce any unique apple. Apples are pretty easy to graft, which as murky suggested, is the normal way to reproduce apples (and has been for centuries -- the Bible even talks about grafting grapes in Romans by way of analogy.) If you want another tree like the old one, just ask for whatever guidance and help you need on this forum, and I'm sure you'll get it. Here is a link that might be useful: Fruit trees from seed

You could try covering part of a runner with dirt and after a while, couple weeks or so cutt it loose from the original vine but leave it in the ground where it is and see what happens. If is fox grapes they do not very well in direct sun they do well in part sun/part shade

Wow Jari, you have such a perfect technique it's like watching a commercial grafter. I am much less smooth and slick. I did 23 grafts yesterday and every cut was just right but I did them from diffent angles, sometimes standing above the RS and cutting downwards. It was the wrapping that became tricky as I was grafting on curved surfaces sometimes and the scion wanted to spring off. Once you have the first winds at the bottom and have trapped it then it's easy to wind it but that could be a fight needing three hands! Wonderful vid, I'll watch it before I graft in future to focus myself.

The easiest and probably best way to graft onto an existing vine is dormant to green grafting. You cut the vine back that will be the rootstock, and let new shoots grow up from the base. When they reach the proper size (similar to the scions), you graft the dormant scions. Since the green shoots don't bleed, the success rate is high. However, as Murky mentioned, most grapes are so easy to root from dormant cuttings, why graft? With Concord, you should be able to just stick a couple of dormant cuttings in the ground as soon as the ground gets warm, and they will easily root.

Could you do this in Florida? Graft a vine that is susceptible to pierce's disease to one that is not. For example I have a Black Monukka could I graft a thompson seedless to it. Would that keep the thompson graft to not get pierce's disease?

Pierce's disease is spread by insects, so grafting probably wouldn't help much
I'm a little bit surprised that Black Monukka will grow in humid Florida. I didn't know it was resistant to Pierce's disease, either.

The only reason I can think of to graft grapes is to put them onto rootstocks which are resistant to soil-borne diseases. And maybe nematodes.

Oh I guess Black Monukka isn't resistant. It was just advertised as a southern grape. Well would anyone know of a good pesticide to keep the sharpshooters from killing my grapes? Also I live in North Florida. All of my grapes are doing great. I have Flame, Black Monukka, and a Thompson seedless. I just got them about a month ago from Willis' Orchard and they are growing like crazy. The Black Monukka and Thompson already have clusters on them. I just am worried about Pierce's disease and need a pesticide for sharpshooters that won't kill my plants. I have Vegol oil pesticide, but it doesn't kill as many bugs as I thought for grapes. IT works great for everything else though.

Those varieties have no fungal resistance at all, so unless you spray them frequently with fungicides, you will likely have serious problems. They also will probably not last more than a couple of years due to PD, unless you grow them in a screen house. I doubt you could spray enough insecticide to protect them from infection. Also, there is no transfer of PD resistance from rootstocks to scions. I really don't understand why a nursery would sell those varieties to someone in Florida.
