Great pics! My squash is compost now. I will plant some more in late August, but the bugs will probably get them again!

Maybe one day. I have taught myself how to successfully grow vegetables, compost, vermicompost, & raise chickens all thanks to the wonders of Google & forums like this. I should ask one of my savvy teens to help their old mom.

testing out my first try at using photobucket - thanks so much for the information. Ailidespain, the chickies in the picture are varmints in the garden. They eat any tomatos, cucumbers they can reach, ruin eggplants and are now eating immature spaghetti squash. And the rabbits ate the melons, including the whole plants and have started on any okra they can reach. Of course, they first ate every leaf off the sweetpotato plants. I try to be cool about sharing, as I do have plenty of free range eggs. Trellis is the only protection I have found so far.

Yeah, I guess I'll forget about ever having chickens for insect control....

From bees to chickens (hope no one minds):

I let my 7 chickens in the garden, but I put wildlife netting around anything they might be tempted to dig up or eat. Every tomato cage has 18" of wildlife netting wrapped around the bottom, and every bed has been fenced off with it. It really frustrates them because they want to get at the compost!

Then in the fall when everything's finished, I remove the netting & let the chickens in to clean up the beds. The netting goes back up in the spring when I plant. It's a little work, but worth it to me. And they really do a great job with insect control.

Actually,the garden is right in front of the barn door, and the chickies have free range in parts of the garden and get water there in some of the planter bases. But I do containers and raised beds for the most part. I fenced the chickies our of the raised beds where tomatos are grown. The bunnies managed to get in..... but at least did not eat tomatos.

The chickies learned to pull down the cucumber plants to get at the fruit, but I have had enough to eat and did make a few pickles as well. They peck the lower egg plants and spaghetti squash. I think they help with the local infestation of grasshoppers.

Ok, finally got some pictures on my computer. This is a (not very high quality) shot of my rain barrel, zucchini, and pole beans). Everything is enclosed in wildlife netting to keep my chickens from destroying it all. I don't think it's too noticeable.
