The best ficus info. on the web is there, plus if you google "growing aerial roots ficus" you should find a page (or little site) with direct info. on how to use damp sphagnum and straws to achieve what I think you might have in mind (when you mentioned banyan). Root over rock is another story, and ficus do root quickly with or without powder. It will also generally bud back lower down if you 'top' it, but be sure that's what you want before going ahead - which is why the aerial root route may be the answer.

Hi Matthew I have a ficus tree, I need to wait an see if it is okay, I was S...L...O...W getting it inside so I need to see how it is going to do or if I KILLED it. I just had my son bring it in today (it was too heavy for me)and we have had some very cold weather, even snow flurries one day. The tree is against a window and under the porch so I'm hoping the heat from the window and the roof of the porch kept it warm enough not to do much damage. I'll let you know (((HUGS))) Sharon

Hello all, I was wondering if it would be possible for anyone to trade me any ficus cuttings they may have. I'm into bonsai and would love some thickish sized Ficus microcarpa or Ficus benjamina. So, those of you in warmer climates with large Ficus', I'm calling out to you! I have Japanese Maple seeds, Coast Redwoods, Dawn Redwoods, and Giant Sequoias. Please help me if possible. Thanks! In most cases small ficuses are sold in a group of 3 for a bushier look I guess. You can plant them in the same pot if you don't mind their roots get entangled. They will grow into a multi-trunk arrangement like your other trees. Growing them separately makes them stronger I think. Here is one of my ficuses that I separated from his 'brothers'. As you can see he got very strong and went under some pruning.
