2 unrelated qs.

1- Is it too late to spray dormant oil on my fruit trees- Im in NYC- Zone 7ish. if its not too late, which brand do you like and where is the cheapest online source.

2- what blueberry soil acidifier do you like and where is the cheapest online source.

I am not an expert but I think you still can spray Dormant trees with dormant oil spray as long as there no bloom. I just sprayed my Peach, Plum and Cherry Trees with Copper. There is no bloom yet. But if the trees has green bloom don't do it. I know dormant oil spray like Bonide kills the leaves. Go check your local store Internet became greedy rip-off. The product cost is $10 and another $10 for handling and shipping. (that it is me )
You can use Sulfur for soil acidifier. I bought 5 pound bag from the farm store is not expensive. All I needed is one or two table spoon per plant

I purchased 25 pounds of sulphur from farm store for $14, I am glad that in SoCal I live 15 miles from a farming area of Oxnard which has a handful of farm supply stores. I also use quite a bit of peat also and some azalea mix.

Are there any fruit trees that are intolerant of the copper in these recommended sprays. I just bought a three pound bag of CuPro 2005 containing 53.8% copper hydroxide, but the directions on the packet were exclusively for ornamentals. My yard and orchard is highly varied with apples, pears, peaches, blueberries, pomegranates, persimmons, goji, cherries, mulberries, apricots, paw paws, figs, pecans, heartnuts, lemons, satsumas, and oranges(potted for winter removal). ..Would any of these be harmed by a late dormant spraying of dormant oil and the copper hydroxide mix? ...Could anyone reccomend a good mix rate for the copper? I only have a total of fifty or so trees that are fairly young and plan to hand spray them for now. I am very sensitive to the comment on copper buildup harming the worm population, and would like to limit copper applications as much as possible. I predominately use organic techniques in my gardens, but early problems with the orchard plantings are forcing me to turn toward spraying my young trees. They all receive generous doses of compost, worm compost, and compost teas in the Spring and Fall. Thanks for your input, Ed

lakelifer - a pH of 4.6 is the cut point and the minimum pH goal is 4.1-4.3. Anything with a pH above 4.6 is considered a low-acid food and so must be pressure canned if used in its natural state. If pickled, then of course the acidity falls well below that level and can be safely BWB thanks to the vinegar. Any thing below 4.6 is considered acid food and can be BWB processed unless it is mixed with low-acid foods. But it isn't just the pH that determines the safety of a product. Other factors that must be computed into the type and time required for processing include: the consistency/density of the food, the presence of nutrients that are "protective" for bacteria (e.g., high protein and sugar levels), the shape and size of the jar, the size, shape and texture of food pieces, the solid to liquid ratio, the temperature of the food at the beginning of the process, and the temperature inside the canner. The acidifier is not considerer a fertilizer - it is just sulfur and although that IS a plant nutrient, it is not a major one and will not contributive to excessive growth this close to fall/winter. Sulfur does take time to break down and become effective in reducing soil pH so I would apply now. There is still plenty of time before the soil cools enough and the microorganisms become inactive to get you started on the program. btw, blueberries are grown commercially in my area and we do not have overly acidic soils. The need for a very low pH is somewhat overstated. They should do very well in a pH of 6.0.

I'm not sure why you are getting so concerned. It is just some early fall color. Most blueberries are known for developing gorgeous fall color. They are often included in more ornamental landscaping for just that reason. And it IS fall :-)) May be a tad early but the factors that cause deciduous trees and shrubs to change color in fall are highly weather related and it is not just the immediate weather conditions but also weather earlier in the season. It may well be that the new planted ones that are showing more color are just not yet fully established in that location and therefore reacting a bit differently and prematurely.

Here in Madison, Wisconsin, I was able to buy a 50 lb bag of agricultural sulfur for around 40 dollars. This was after visiting all of the garden centers I could find, where small bags of sulfur sell for around 3.50/pound.

Peat Moss and Ammonium Sulfate are two products you need to help grow blueberries. Peat Moss at the time of planting in the amount of about 50% of the soil mixture. Ammonium Sulfate to fertilize them year after year.

Sulfur and Peat Moss should be added at the time of planting. It takes a few months for the sulfur to acidify the soil as the microbes in the soil has to break it down. Then the Ammonium Sulfate can be added after the blueberries are well established and continued year after year.
