Squash Bug Eggs

I live in zone 7, Maryland. Now is the time to seek out the eggs of the squash bug. Check under the leaves of your squash, zukes, cukes, and vines. You can really save youself a headache by removing eggs. I removed over 600. You can see detailed pictures of the process on my blog.

I know a few things and can learn even more. I was wondering what predators may attack the eggs of the squash bugs. As you can see the main method is removing the eggs. The eggs seem like they would be good food. I found over 600 and imagine they are being left alone.

Nope. Not eggs. Those little buggers are aphids. You won't see them running around. You can squish them, take some masking tape and stick them off like you would lint on your pants or spray with an insecticidal soap.

In bad years when we have a lot of squash bugs, I carry a regular old table knife (dull but slightly serrated) in my pocket, and scrape the eggs off with that. It gives a clean sweep, and is the best tool I've found for the job.

Definitely not a hatched squash bug. Looks more a gnat. 2 wings. I took my pocket knife out and was going to scrape the eggs off and noticed him. I moved my knife over to him to see if he would move. He , well I guess she, was really latched onto those eggs. She kind of popped off, I thought I might have damaged her. But she came back in a few minutes and that is when I took this photo. Now I just hope it iswhat I hope it is.

Insecticidal soaps have been effective on some insect eggs at some times, usually just before hatch out when the protective coating of those egg cases is breaking down. Hand squising is probably the most effective means of eliminating egg cases however.

I've been scraping these off with a razor and then squishing the eggs. That way I don't lose the leaves of the plants.

I wish the borer eggs were as easy to spot -- I've seen the borer, but not the eggs!

duct tape wrapped around your hand/glove removes the eggs without damaging the leaves.

Why did you cut off the leaves? You can just smash the eggs and move on to the next leaf. I just rub them with my fingers. I am sure duct tape will work, but doing this on 300-400 squash plants isn't a viable option.
