herbal experimenting for aphrodisiac results

Hi. I am new to this page and am hoping to find some people experienced with various herbs that actually help older people regain some of the sexual zest they had when younger. I have bought a dozen or so herbs that are in many herbal preparations sold today. But may of them have side effects I don't like, so I thought I would experiment and see if I could figure out a mix that was effective but not include unwanted sides. Maybe this is not possible. But I am going to give it a try. Is this the right place to proceed? If so, I will post what I have bought, and what I have learned so far, after someone has replied an answer.

This may not be the best place to expect honest answers on this subject. Previous discussions have been flooded with spam from supplement marketers.

Whatever responses you get, I suggest you be especially wary of any from people who have just registered with GardenWeb (you can check this by clicking on the My Page hyperlink in their post). Many spammers start promoting products the very same day they register. Also be aware that some herbal aphrodisiac supplements have been found to contain prescription drugs like Cialis.

There is limited evidence any herbal product is going to make a big difference in this area, certainly less than recultivating a relationship with one's partner and getting into good physical shape.

I agree that there are plenty of spammers out there and products to avoid, but disagree that herbs have no capability to affect the libido. Herbs can influence the immune system, neurotransmitters, ion balance, etc. etc., why not the bodily systems associated with sex?

Fitness, diet, and cultivating a relationship are a good basis for sexual health, but for some people, herbs like ginseng, ashwagandha, epimedium, tribulus, ginkgo, and others may also be beneficial.

I have written about many aphrodisiacs at www.aphrodisiology.com. Not trying to sell Dr. Smith's Amazing Patented Elixir of Youth - just writing about what is known about aphrodisiacs and my experiences.

As far as side effects go, I have anxiety and panic disorder, and have noticed definite issues with things like tongkat ali and nutmeg. On the other hand, there are relaxing herbs like passionflower, scutellaria, rose extract, etc. that are good for both anxiety and libido.

'Surfing the net' isn't so difficult. If you type in what you're looking for, any search engine (such as Google, and there are many of them - search for 'Search Engine'!) will come up with many results for you. Sometimes literally millions! I typed in 'drug interactions' and there are 23,400,000 sites dealing with the subject. It's up to you to click on ones that appeal to you, and check them out. When you get into a particular site, you can always click on any link in there - if it doesn't give you what you want, just click on the Back icon at the top of your browser page. (The browser is the program that connects you to the internet. eg Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera etc). The best advice I can give computer newbies is NOT to click on anything that looks vaguely like an advertisement! Especially those advertising free horoscopes (there's no such thing as 'free') or smilies, or malware programs and the like. These are frequently loaded up with viruses and other assorted bugs. If you haven't got a Firewall installed, or an anti-virus program, you should! Some more relevant advice: unless you are a doctor or a pharmacist, it is inadviseable to offer any sort of advice about pharmaceutical medications. When clients ask about this, the kindest and safest advice you can offer if 'sorry, that's outside my field of expertise. Best to ask your doctor'. You could find yourself in very deep doo-doo if you give advice and it's wrong. You can tell your client to look up the particular drug on the internet, too! For yourself, just type in the name of the drug in the search bar of your browser, and you'll get many sites to read through. Here's an interesting site I found by clicking on search results for 'drug interactions prozac': http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html Follow the prompts (you need to 'agree' to the terms and conditions), type in the name of the result, and you'll get a list of drugs the one you typed in can interact with. Just for the heck of it I typed in 'Prozac'. If you are familiar with all (even many!) of the drugs listed, you're a walking encyclopaedia on the subject!! Charlie - if by "nutritional value" you mean enhancement of immune function, there's some evidence that both above-ground growth and roots of Echinacea may have value. Here's a study that looked at echinacea for preventing and treating the common cold: "Echinacea preparations tested in clinical trials differ greatly. There is some evidence that preparations based on the aerial parts of Echinacea purpurea might be effective for the early treatment of colds in adults but results are not fully consistent. Beneficial effects of other Echinacea preparations, and for preventative purposes might exist but have not been shown in independently replicated, rigorous randomized trials." The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has recently done a couple of clinical trials on echinacea with negative results. "Study results are mixed on whether echinacea can prevent or effectively treat upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold. For example, two NCCAM-funded studies did not find a benefit from echinacea, either as Echinacea purpurea fresh-pressed juice for treating colds in children, or as an unrefined mixture of Echinacea angustifolia root and Echinacea purpurea root and herb in adults. However, other studies have shown that echinacea may be beneficial in treating upper respiratory infections." In my own experience, I've avoided colds and flu after taking Echinacea preparations before plane flights, but I've also avoided sickness when I didn't take it - so, my anecdotes are not the greatest evidence. Where I suspect you're correct about Echinacea herbal rip-offs, it's those products that are not properly standardized to contain an optimal amount of active ingredient (or may not contain any active ingredient at all). But that's a problem plaguing the supplement industry as a whole.

It would be difficult to judge a bias towards positive results just by looking at the Cochrane reviews. If, for example, 50% of the reviews into a particular type of therapy judged that it was useful, that might seem low to someone who values that kind of therapy. On the other hand, if the original research that was evaluated as part of that review was biased towards positive results, the 50% figure might actually be high. Examples of reported positive biases: Here's a brief report about presentations on emergency medicine. It was found that when researchers applied to present their work at an emergency med conference, favorable results were more likely to be accepted and later published. In other words, if you found that Treatment X was of value, your work might be disseminated more than if you found that Treatment X did not work. The same thing happens with publications on alternative medical practices. The book "Snake Oil Science" notes that it is almost unheard of in Chinese medical journals to report that acupuncture doesn't work for a medical condition - for any condition studied, acupuncture is said to be effective in virtually 100% of the published studies. Contrast that with reports in Western journals, where acupuncture is rated effective half the time or less. It's rather suspect when any treatment is found broadly effective for any condition studied, 100% of the time. If you do a review of the scientific literature on acupuncture for some condition, inclusion of the Chinese studies could make acupuncture look better than it actually is. Cochrane weeds out some of the papers on a topic based on defects in study design, but all systematic reviews have to grapple with potential biases towards positive results. I think the problem is easing as more attention is called to it, but it's still something to keep in mind when evaluating research.

Lazy: Thank you for sharing. I appreciate what you're saying. And I should add that it sounds like we both pick and choose our paths according to our ability to reason. Personally, I don't subscribe to all of the Chinese remedies. For instance, I won't use animal parts as part of a regimen. That's what's referred to as the "filth pharmacy." What I have been referring to in past postings is the PRINCIPLES behind the art of eastern herbology. Coincidentally, western herbology from the native americans follow many of the same principles of eastern herbology. They do follow the natural laws. The only drawback about native american herbology that I've discerned is that the native americans didn't have a way of writing down their understanding whereas the Chinese wrote down the results of their research for thousands of years.. As a result, native americans' herbology techniques were passed on verbally from one generation to another and became subject to much superstitious and magical beliefs that became intermixed with their herbal remedies. Selenium is supposed to be helpful to men. I think it is classified as a food supplement, or mineral supplement. Please do research on anything you decide to try. You need to be aware of any contraindications depending upon your personal health, dosages, etc. Do web searches, when you come across something of interest to you!

Zinc has gotten lots of attention for men - it is required to produce testosterone. Selenium might benefit some - will check on that further. My impression was that selenium was especially useful when cadmium or mercury exposure was an issue, or when the anti-oxidant status of the body was low. Certainly, if there is a deficiency in any mineral, it could affect overall health and libido.

HI again. Since I first posted, I have been experimenting and have had some interesting results. Not results like Viagra... but then I would not want results like that with side effects. But, the combination of a few herbs has in my case at least, been nice. I still have much experimenting to do.

Some of the herbs on Rhana's list have traditional associations that can be fun to read about.

It is not so benign to encourage use of ginseng for something where there is no demonstrated benefit, potentially adding to the overharvesting of this herb and its eradication from the wild.

Over-zealous collecting of ginseng is a real problem. Using sustainable sources is important.
