Apple tree peeling bark help!

I planted an apple tree I got from a nursery last spring. A few weeks ago I noticed that the bark on the tree has started to peel away, and it seems to be getting worse. Any suggestions on what I can do to solve this problem???

If the bark is peeling at the cambium layer your tree may be beyond help. What I'm saying is that if it's not just the surface of the bark but all the bark, that's bad. Prevention is the only solution. Paint the bark with a 50:50 mix of interior white latex paint diluted with water.

Normally the bark doesn't peal back down to the cambium...unless some kind of injury...any picture? I could be just some superficial lifting of sun scale, if so, don't worry.

Hope you're right FN. The older tree is certainly dying - all but 2 scaffolds died last year. But when I saw the tree next to it peeling bark so copiously, so much like the dying branches on the other tree, I began to worry.

The 'fungus' is actually lichen. Completely harmless and completely unrelated to the die-back. There are many things that can cause a lilac to die-back. In your case, large mature stems of common lilac are particularly susceptible to lilac borer. Stressed trees are also more susceptible to the borer...how much salt does your DOT put on that road behind the lilac?

We have that damage fairly frequently here. Fast growth in the spring and days with strong winds can cause it ( limbs and small diameter trunks whipping in the wind) hail can cause that type of damage as well. Looks like yours are healing fine. It can be an entrance area for bacteria when fresh.
